SDDM greeter blinking as mad after upgrade MGA6 > MGA7.

SDDM greeter blinking as mad after upgrade MGA6 > MGA7.

Postby marchugo » Dec 4th, '19, 18:08

Yesterday I upgraded MGA6 to MGA7 per the online applett. Some 2800 RPMs were installed smoothly, but halfway I saw a hickup: the installer was not very happy with my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 6200, which used driver 304.137 under MGA6, but that driver is not included in the RPMs for MGA7). Apparently the MGA7 installer found a way around the problem by installing the Nouveau driver.

In the end the system came up, but the SDDM greeter popup was not blue but black, and blinking as mad every second. The fields for username and login are hardly visible and the whole screen looks a bit messy, with parts of the log lines still visible in the opening screen (which it not black).

With some luck I manage to fill in the username and login. Then the system (Plasma on a 64-bit PC with 4 GB memory) starts smoothly in graphical mode. No further problems until now (apart from Google Earth crashing).

In the system log files I do not see problematic warnings. The SDDM greeter seems work normal.

But: in the X-Org Log file I find this error line:

Information [ 76.100] (EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{6a66ef25-2155-4aa5-898d-f462c479ed26}": No such file or directory

Googling didn't give any helpfull clues on this error.

Now my question is: what causes this error, and how can I correct this mad blinking greeter?

Maybe I could install the old Nvidia driver 304.137, which is still available at the site of Nvidia? That driver was o.k. for my Geforce 6200 graphics card.
The driver nvidia340.107.9, that is part of MGA7, is not suitable for my graphics card.

Thanks for any hints.

Marc.

The error from the log is also present in a normally working system, maybe just a race condition where Xorg or sddm-helper tries to access it but the session is not yet completely running. I'd say it's not related to the graphical issues, those are probably more related to nouveau.

Could you please post the contents of your /etc/sddm.conf ?

Somebody also hit a similar issue, and they workarounded it by letting sddm start a little later during boot: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 4#p1471264

Thanks for your time, Doktor.

Attached you'll find a copy of /etc/sddm.conf, plus a selection of lines about sddm from the System Log.

If you need more info, please let me know.

BTW: My MGA7 system is rather unstable, crashing every now and then, often freezing. I can't see a pattern, but I see many error lines in the logs. As I'm an amateur in ICT, I can't make sense of the errors. Maybe better to open a seperate thread on that.

Marc.

Yes, it's smart for sure, to open up different topics for your other issues.

For your interest, here is my sddm.conf. It's considerable shorter, and has some main differences. ;)

Well, the sddm.conf is pretty much all default settings, so that's not an issue.
Also, there are no issues in the log excerpt.

From what I can tell, the flickering so far was only reported for cauldron before mga7 was released, against intel and nouveau drivers, but it has also been fixed there with the latest Qt updates.
See https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24060 for more details, maybe you can get some details from there, and also check maybe whether your update hasn't completed fully yet ?

Doktor,

Thanks for your judgement.

How can I check if my online update was really completed?

Best post the output as root of
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active --list-url
urpmi --auto-update --auto --force --test

Attached the output of urpmq and urpmi. Everything seems ok to me.

The 81 updates from today didn't change the strange behaviour of the blinking black greeter.

The whole screen behind the greeter popup is blinking black and blue, about every half second. In the black screen I can see the remains of the boot log text lines. In the blue screen I see that in the upper right corner a time and date stamp is blinking (white characters), with two different time stamps upon each other/through each other. One time stamp is the actual time, the other is an older (?) one. No idea where it comes from.

As a follow up I see a curious line in the file xorg-session.log on my user desktop, see attachment: connection refused to kwallet.socket.

Plus two screen pictures of the blinking sddm greeter.

Please don't attach such short outputs as text files, just post them directly using code-tags.

That's pretty much irrelevant for the sddm issue, as that happens much later during the start of your plasma session.

Today I decided to do a clean install, because the MGA7 system was very unstable after doing the online upgrade from MGA6 to MGA7 with the aapplett.

Now something strange happened: after installing with the Live Plasma ISO for x86-64, the system booted up fine. Graphics are stable, and the error with the wild blinking sddm greeter had disappeared.

But: the aapplett invited me to download another threehundred rpms. After installing them and rebooting, the error with the blinking greeter reappeared. Even worse than before, because now I can't see the characters that I have to type in the greeter.
Allthough I can login and the system appears stable, the question remains: what causes the flickering sddm greeter, and what can be done against it? Apparently the RPMs on the Live ISO are not causing the error. But which of the more than 300 RPMs that came after the upgrade trigger the error?

This might be the same issue as in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13190
Can you try whether downgrading the packages listed there allows SDDM to work normally again ?

Thanks for the advise, but I prefer not to play with my production machine by shuffling RPMs back and forth.

In the mean time I tested booting with the lightDM manager and XDM. They both boot the system fine, without any blinking. The blinking occurs only with sddm.

Thanks for your time Dok.
Today I finally had time for a look in the installed RPMs. The only rpm of the list that you mention is: plasma-workspace-5.15.4-1.1.mga7.x86_64
This RPM was updated a week ago, on Dec 7, and that did not help to prevent the blinking greeter. I had the blinking already after my upgrade to MGA7 on Dec 3, that is: with the old version of that RPM. Of course in theory it could be possible that the blinking greeter still is caused by plasma-workplace, but how can I check that?

Just to mention only that the problem can still be present.

1. Fresh install of mageia 7 x86 from DVD; plasma desktop.
2. All upgrades done (for mga7).
3. Then upgraded from mga7 to mga8. After upgrade the login screen flickers.

The machine:
- Celeron E3200
- GeForce G72 card (nouveau driver automatically installed)

This is not a real problem for me because the machine is not intended to be used any more.
I did just a single test to see how the upgrade process (mga7 --> mga8) looks like and noticed the issue.
