[SOLVED] Video driver help

Postby rwilson » Oct 7th, '19, 02:34

I was running Mageia 5 using the fglrx driver and was very happy with the performance. I upgraded to Mageia 6 then immediately upgraded to Mageia 7.Now the only way I can get a GUI is to use the vesa driver for Xorg.,MCC identifies my card as Radeon HD 5000 to HD 6300 and later (radeon/fglrx) but I can't start X with that. Am I doing something wrong or is Radeon support just broken in the newest Mageia?

No, the problem is upstream, as the amdgpu-pro driver does not support the newer X server: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_7_Rel ... eo_drivers
Although the free radeon driver should be working.

Can you please post the output of the following commands
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Can you also post your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf please ?

You can try if it helps to boot with the kernel option nomodeset

Kernel option modeset only resulted in an additional log line.

Code: Select all
Oct  8 21:13:47 pita kernel: [    0.191999] You have booted with nomodeset. This means your GPU drivers are DISABLED
Oct  8 21:13:47 pita kernel: [    0.192001] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does, you should reboot without enabling it

I even went the total opposite and tried radeon.modeset=1 with no luck.

The current vesa xorg.conf is:

Code: Select all

When I've been trying the radeon driver I've just been swapping "vesa" out for "radeon" in that file.

So you manually edited xorg.conf ? Did you try it once via drakx11 - http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/7/en/content/ ... ml#XFdrake ?

Yes, most of my attempts have been using drakx11. It defaults to radeon/fglrx which results in:

Image
Code: Select all
An error occurred:
(EE)
Fatal server error:

Try to change some parameters

The only one that works is vesa/fglrx. I was actually surprised to see fglrx listed in the menu, I thought it didn't work with the newer kernels.

It doesn't since quite some time, that's why it says radeon/fglrx

Found the solution. When I originally installed the fglrx module it blacklisted the radeon module. I removed the blacklist files from /etc/modprobe.d and /etc/modules.d, then removed my xorg.conf and rebooted. Xorg started using the radeon driver and I have my dual monitors and hdmi audio back. Thanks for helping me out.
