NVidia Issue when updating Mageia7-RC to Final via iso-file

Hi,

I have not seen this issue reported yet so far, so I guessed I should report it here for others to benefit from it.
Did any of you experience NVidia-troubles when updating Mageia7-RC to Final via the iso-file?
I used the official x64-iso on a USB stick.
I got stuck with the NVidia \-driver not starting and had to switch to tty2 and figure it out.

The logfile gave the following:
Code: Select all
  2717.701] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.9.log", Time: Fri Jul 12 16:21:36 2019

  2717.704] (II) LoadModule: "nvidia"

[  2717.704] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

Please consult the Mageia support
         at https://bugs.mageia.org
 for help.
[  2717.705] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.9.log" for additional information.

So the module was not compiled or copied to the right location.

"dkms status" confirmed it was ok.

"lsmod nvidia" did not result in much.

Was I missing packages?

"rpm -qa | grep nvidia"
resulted in 2 packages: dkms- and a doc-package.

My network was up and there were online repositories configured, so I tried:
"urpmq --list | grep nvidia | less" (run as root)

which showed there were more packages available, among them:

nvidia-cuda-toolkit-10.1.168-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-doc-html-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-cuda-opencl-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
lib64nvidia-egl-wayland-devel-1.0.3-4.mga7
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-devel-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
dkms-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-utils-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
lib64nvidia-egl-wayland1-1.0.3-4.mga7

x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree is a crucial package for the nvidia-driver together with the dkms-package.
(devel-packages may not be needed at all.)

I installed all of the above to be sure.

As an example: "urpmi -v x11-driver-video-nvidia-current" (-v is verbose, so you can see progress, again run as root).

When you want to watch videos its important to check if the vdpau-lib is available:
(They should be auto-selected as a dependency with one of the above packages though.)

If not run:
"rpm -qa | grep vdpau"

If it/they is/are not there try:
"urpmq --list | grep vdpau" to check available packages, again run as root:

lib64vdpau-devel-1.2-3.mga7
lib64vdpau1-1.2-3.mga7
vlc-plugin-vdpau-3.0.7.1-1.mga7.tainted

Install them with:
"urpmi -v {above packagename}" (run as root)

Is everything works out okay, only one thing needs to be done:
Execute "XFdrake" (as root)

Select the right card model (Geforce 635 and later in my case) and confirm the question about the driver being in the Non-Free repositories.
I kept the default settings on my laptop and quit (It saved the config).

After a reboot my GNOME-desktop smiled at me again and I too was happy! Both the Xorg-logfile and the nvidia-settings utility confirmed all things were okay now.

I did some further digging and the USB-stick as well as the official 64-bit iso-file both did not contain the "x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree" package in the nonfree-drirectory.
I did check the iso-file's md5 sum, they matched.
So was there an issue with the construction/building of the iso-file?

Hope someone can benefit from this story.

Reason: Placed command-output in between [CODE]-tags for better readability ;) And topic moved to appropriate sub-forum.

Re: NVidia Issue when updating Mageia7-RC to Final via iso-f

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Unfortunately a packaging change between RC and final caused the x11-driver-video-nvidia-current package to get missed off the ISO. However, we are going to issue updated ISOs to provide a workaround for the bug in the latest AMD Ryzen CPUs (described here), so we can fix this too. Your report was timely :-)
