Help with mageia with AMD Vega 56

Postby scanray » Feb 8th, '19, 18:13

Hi,

I have a mageia 6 installed on my computer. I changed the video card for an AMD Vega 56. I can start mageia in text mode. The graphic mode does not work.
I have tried with the vesa and fbdev modules. In the latter only the xfce works.
The amdgpu does not work. The error always comes out that it does not find a suitable screen.

I downloaded the beta version of mageia 7, but it does not go beyond the boot menu.

Is there any way to make this card work?

Thank you.

Trying mailing lists or IRC for help might be faster.

Or there is no solution?

You could try the 4.18 kernel available in the backports repository.

Hi @martinw,

Thanks, for your help.
I've already tried with kernel 4.18, nothing.
Even I have made an upgrade to the cauldron version.
But it's always the same. I can boot in verbose mode and load KDM. After that, black screen. Of course using amdgpu. fbdev always work, but only with xfce.

Possibly there is a command to enter in the grub to make it work, but I have not found it. (It reminds me of NVIDIA in its beginnings, I had to enter it to start in text mode or vesa, something like this)

It might help if you would post the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Well, this is only informative for whoever is interested.

I installed the cauldron and the Vega 56 did not work. Then I did an update, all with the new mga7 modules. The vega worked very well but using the kernel 4.20.9
Then I update the kernel to version 5.x.x (I do not remember exactly the number), but this did not work.
When MGA beta 7 came out, I made a fresh installation. Everything worked very well. It comes with the kernel 4.20.9.
Apparently it works very well, including acceleration. At least it loads the KDE with plasma. I have not done any tests yet, so I can not guarantee efficiency.

Have a good day
