so firstly ive tried this out of two TV's one a samsung hdmi connected full HD and also an LG hdmi connected full HD. both are capable of 60hts.

The graphics card is a nvidia GT250.

ive tried with both Nvidia and nouveau with slightly differing results.

and ive tried same install via hdmi nd via 15 pin dsub, analog port.

there is no problem when connected with the dsub, in any resolution upto full HD.

however connected via HDMI, first under nvidia driver, the plasma menu and start/launch is tiny and just about readable with my glasses on
on a 32 inch screen the task bar is less than 5mm in height, and the menu 4cm.
all the writing is in a font with a height of less that 1 mm.

but the desktop icons are huge, ie about 8cm square.

switch to the nouveau driver and the task bar and menu and icons are all fine.

however logout or start with the plasma login screen and the login box is as big as the TV, in height with about 2 inches down each side in width.

looks to be like via HDMI the system is interpreting the monitor incorrectly, with slightly different results from nouveau and nv drivers.

switch the TV's back to 15 pin HDMI and its as you would expect, nice and proportional.

This is not a major issue fro me i can live with it, so not a call for support, more an observation in case anyone else is seeing it.

could be down to one graphics card type.

I'd take a look at the EDID data via monitor-edid and also which DPI values are selected by the X server, and compare those between the HDMI and dsub connections.

I had somewhat similar issues with a Philips HD TV connected to an nvidia GT240 graphics card through hdmi.
After install I booted into a plasma desktop with the nouveau driver active (either I missed the option to switch to nvidia driver, or it wasn't offered during install).
I didn't notice any font or icon issues, but also I only used it to do a switch to the nvidia driver.
When I then re-booted and logged into the plasma desktop, I had very small, more or less unreadable fonts and a very narrow task bar.
What finally got me back to fonts similar to what I had in mga5, was going into System Settings->font and checking "Force fonts DPI", leaving the value at the suggested 96.
After logout-login and manually increasing the height of the task bar, the desktop looked fine.

I have exactly the same scaling issue with the new installation of Mageia 6 with the graphics card Nvidia GT 220, 1Mb. The driver is "nvidia". With the D-Sub connector to my 1920x1080 monitor the screen looks perfect, all the proportions are observed. But when I connect the video card to my 1920x1080 TV via HDMI cable, the Plasma screen shows HUGE icons, HUGE fonts in the most standard applications, and a very little bottom panel (with huge fonts anyway).

Please, see some screenshots of the whole 1920x1080 screen attached. It looks like the driver "thinks" it works for a mobile device screen

Can anybody help me fix the issue?

Now I am trying to use the nouveau driver (I have to read how to do this correctly. Maybe, someone could help me in it, too?)

That looks like a DPI issue, seems via HDMI cable the DPI is detected in the wrong way.
You can change DPI on the fly but you may need to restart affected applications for that to take effect.
You can also change the DPI value in KDE systemsettings.

To query current DPI, run as regular user:

To change the DPI to 90, run as regular user:

xrandr --dpi 90

Default DPI value is based on driver and attached display, but X defaults to 96 DPI since some time.

Great! Thank you very much! It worked well, and the issue is now SOLVED.

Just for reference, how did you change it, and from what to what value ? Others might be interested for comparison / context.

First I ran
$ xdpyinfo | grep dots
and got the response:
resolution: 360x360 dots per inch.

This was definitely too much, and this was the reason the screen looked so ugly
(see the screenshots). I followed the link

and learned from there that the standard value for a table monitor DPI is 96x96:
"it's recommended to set it to 96, 120 (25% higher), 144 (50% higher), 168 (75%
higher), 192 (100% higher) etc., to reduce scaling artifacts".
The bigger the DPI, the larger the screen objects it produces.

for my 38" TV screen gave me the value "DPI: 57.97". However, the computer I
installed Mageia 6 on was exclusively intended to watch internet TV on the
Samsung 38" TV screen with HDMI input. If you seat on a sofa in 2-3 meters from
the TV, to comfortably work with the desktop the icons and other objects should
be larger than they normally show on the table monitor located just in front of
your eyes. So, experimentally I found the appropriate value of DPI 120x120.

To find the best resolution I tried to fix it manually for a time being with the
commands like:

$ xrandr --dpi 96
$ xrandr --dpi 120

(xrandr can be installed from the Mageia repository)
They affected only the newly opened application windows. When I made sure DPI
120 is what I need, I set this value in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the
"Monitor" section:

After logout/login the screen took normal look.

Once again, I am really grateful to doktor5000 for his invaluable advice. I
