Difficulty Booting X Server - Driver Problem ?

Hi All
On a clean install of Mageia 5, I have the following problem.
It only works using the VESA video driver...
If I try to use Nouveau or the proprietary Nvidia driver the machine crashes on boot with a Kernel Panic and the claim it is seeing an "unknown chipset"

The machine is an Asrock Z270 Pro 4 motherboard (Z270 chipset) with 32GB RAM, i7-7700K CPU, GTX1070 GPU, 500GB SSD and 2TB SATA drive.
It is not overclocked or stressed in any way.

It dual boots with WIN 10 and Windows boots up with no problems.

All help appreciated :)

How exactly do you try to use other drivers? And please post the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v

How exactly do you try to use other drivers?

By loading them through the "Set Up Graphical Server" tab in the Control Centre and direct modification of the xorg.conf file.

Well the Linux "voodoo' has worked again...... When I went to go back to install the Nvidia driver to get file you wanted, it worked..... :?
This was despite the fact that before I wrote that post, I had tried at least half a dozen times using exactly the same procedure, with no joy at all, ... fiik

The only difference was that I had installed Mageia as a VM in the Windows OS.......

Thanks for those "Vibes""' you sent it.. :D

While I have your attention, How do I make Windows the default boot option ? Windows appears as an option in the main splash screen, but does not appear as an option in the "Select default boot" drop down, in the "Set up Boot" screen.

TIA
Brodo

According to ubuntu nvidia driver minimum version needed is 376 and we have in nonfree updates testing 375,you may have to remove nvidia nonfree driver and install it from nvidia website.
There is also some problems with nvidia drivers block it to be released as an update in Mageia 5.

You can mark an entry as default by editing it in drakboot: https://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/drakboot.html
Or by manually adding the savedefault option, but you should mention which bootloader you're using currently.

Minimum version needed for what ?

If I get the driver from the Nvidia site, do I still need to run the conversion script on it to make suitable for install in Mageia as per Mag 1 and 2 ?

you should mention which bootloader you're using currently.

The default, Grub 2.

Minimum mean older one don't support your graphics card.

Thanks
DUH (with facepalm).....

Does anyone have the answer as to whether or not the Nvidia .run files still need to be converted for use in Mageia ?

Brodo

Edit: From 2012
What I mean when I talk about file format conversion

They never needed to be converted. It was just more convenient to have them installed in RPM format. But you can also just use the installer directly, after removing all nvidia packages.

Hi,

the 375 long lived branch does support GTX 10xx cards...
It's just that we didin't have the latest in mga5

I've now pushed 375.66 to nonfree updates testing:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21188

note that you need ldetect-lst-0.1.346.6-1.mga5 from core updates testing for drakx to know what cards the driver supports

Please report how it works in the mentioned bug report

re which boot loader, if it wasn't obvious i think doktor was referring to which boot screen do you see, around the choice of windows and mageia.

is it a blue mageia plasma background or a black microsoft one.

if its the latter, then thats why you dont see windows as an option in the magiea boot config.
