Mageia is my main distro, but I dual-boot with Mint for games. A recently installed RX460 card works well with Mint, but when I boot into Mageia 5 the only resolution available is 800 x 600. I have an old version still installed (Mint 15 with the 3.8 kernel), and even that supports my usual resolution of 1920 x 1080.
I'm not interested in getting graphics acceleration with Mageia 5, so this isn't a question about drivers, but I would like to know why Mageia can't use the higher resolutions, while even old versions of Mint can.

Well, what driver do you use in Mint and which driver do you use in Mageia?

I don't know what drivers are in use in either distro- I haven't installed any. I thought that (minimal) support was provided by the kernel.

Well, you selected the fbdev driver which is a really basic framebuffer driver, so that is the answer why you only get 800x600 by default.
Change to a different driver via http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/XFdrake.html
Not sure if this is supported by the free ati driver or by the proprietary fglrx driver, you might need to try out for yourself.

I didn't personally select the fbdev driver, it was selected by the Mageia 5 installation.
Trying other drivers today has proved hazardous: some of them caused the boot to freeze after

[OK] Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes

and after one change, rebooting stopped at a Grub prompt, and I had to use Rescatux to rebuild the boot!
Changing drivers by trial and error is proving to be a long job, and as Mageia 6 sta1 is handling the RX 460 OK, I'll wait for the release of Mageia 6. Meanwhile, I'll only fit the card when using Mint.
I'm still curious as to how drivers installed with even early versions of Mint differ from those installed with Mageia 5: could it be a connection with free drivers?

Well, which drivers did you choose, you don't provide any details at all. Also, why did the start of X fail is contained in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I've posted above how to check that log

FYI

RX 460 uses the AMDGPU driver. radeon driver dosn't support the RX (Polaris) series.

You'll need to stick to MGA6/cauldron to use it.

Well, it was my intention to wait for Mageia 6, as I didn't want to risk disabling Mageia 5 with further experiments. However, I've just tried another driver (ATI Radeon 5000 and later) with success. I can now get full resolution in Mageia 5, which saves me the trouble of removing the video card.
Strange that old versions of Mint can choose a driver automatically, and Mageia 5 can't.

Just a quick note:

I opened MCC to test the driver, chose "ATI Radeon 5000 and later....." said no to proprietary version, hit test -- and got input not supported floating bar, probably a monitor failsafe message. I tried esc, ctl-alt-backspace, even ctl-alt-del and few other more ridiculous key combinations I'm too embarrassed to mention, all to no avail.

I have the 460 and I too am using low res vesa, and I am waiting (patiently and with admiration and gratitude) for sta2 live media test iso with amdgpu.

I can't remember whether or not I said "no" to a proprietary driver, but at a guess, I didn't say no.
While trying (at random) the options, I too had to resort to resetting the computer using the button- reminded me of trying to get games to run on Windows 20 years ago.
I suggest that you try again, but this time don't say "no".

For reference, the test will usually never work in a running system IMHO, as depending on what driver is currently used one kernel module will keep the graphics card busy.
If you want to test, select a different driver, then save the new settings and reboot.

Thanks Dok. You are font of learned skill. I have never run into that problem, never had a freeze using test. I used test because it took half a day, after installing the card, as x failed for hours. I want a higher resolution, but I dont want that again.

I have a higher resolution now, using save and reboot (several times) as Dok suggested. No automatic monitor detection, needed to use generic flat with specific resolution, no auto resolution, had to specify one, and lastly I could not use the proprietary driver ( I needed to "say no" ).

Five reboots. Also, on the last reboot, because it worked, one of the mageia boot screens was eye burning fuzzed out yellow that made me fear for my monitor
