Driver configuration for old Radeon 9000

Just did a fresh install of Mga6 on an old Dell workhorse from 2003-04 that has a Radeon 9000 video card, actually listed on lspci as:
[AMD/ATI] RV250/M9 [Mobility FireGL 9000/Radeon 9000] (rev 2)
From poking around the net, this card hasn't been had a Linux proprietary driver available for at least 10 years. However, I previously had a arch-based installation in this machine that worked decently, falling back to software acceleration for 3D rendering. Mageia installed the "Radeon HD 4870 and earlier" driver. Both it and the generic Xorg "ati" driver work so far for all but the Mageia Control Center where the nothing shows in the main window.
Is there anyone else out there with an old Radeon card who has struggled with this?
