no mouse cursor under KDM

no mouse cursor under KDM

Postby rychok » Apr 13th, '16, 01:36

I have two laptops ASUS GL752 and refurbished HP Envy m7-n109dx I got today.
I have already posted about my experience with ASUS, but I do not remember if I have mentioned problem with cursor after fresh install with updates.
Today I have installed Mageia 5 on HP Envy m7-n109dx and like with ASUS fresh installation will booth to rescue but not to X.
Finishing installation with system updates makes laptop start correctly with X server, but there is no mouse cursor. I did not try changing KDM to XDM but it worked on ASUS so it should on HP.
I have looked on Google, and only found some few years old posts with same problem mostly without solution besides changing display manager. Both laptops have similar Intel Nvidia graphics.
Everything is fine on my other two laptops upgraded from Mageia 4 to 5.
Anyone had similar problem?

When you run drakx11 in rescue boot, under options does it offer something for the cursor, like hardware acceleration? Best try to toggle that.

And best also show the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
lspcidrake -v | grep VGA

or copy away /var/log/Xorg.0.log when X fails to start and attach it here.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

I already tried that, but I am not sure this settings can be changed. If I change it it looks unchecked, but running drakx11 again shows the check mark back.
I found some reports abouth this problem when Mageia 5 was in caldron - without any conclusion. It seems to be some random issue. I think when I first time installed Mageia 5 on Asus everything was fine as far as cursor. It must be some problem with Intel video driver ( I have not tried to see if there is a way to activate Nvidia) because cursor is one thing another is that I have just found out that if my display goes to sleep, it will not function correctly after a wake. Even with xdm cursor is invisible, mowing mouse left and right is shifting screen and moving mouse up will make screen black to the position of the cursor for first half of the screen then will change it to fully black. Ctrl + Alt + Backspace will end up with black screen, but it looks like X is running because when I press the combination again I can see the login screen for a split of the second juts it looks like driver is displaying wrong page from memory. I do not know it this is also case for the cursor.
