[Solved] Screen working with Ubuntu and not with Mageia

Hello,
A strange thing happens to me.
I have 2 desktops, PC1 with Mageia5 and a 24"screen, PC2 with Mageia5, Ubuntu and a 17" screen. Both have no graphic card and uses the Intel IGP.
I few days ago, PC1 began to blink all black from time to time and more and more often. I checked connections, but they were all fine. I swaped the screens, PC1 with the 17" works fine and PC2 with the 24" has problems. I can see the Mageia5 bootsplash, but the screen becomes black at the connection screen, stays black during all the session and works again during the powering off.
Why does the screen work during the powering on and off and not between ?
So, I tried to boot Ubuntu, and there, the 24" screen works fine.
In short, my screen doesn't work with Mageia 5 on 2 different PCs but works with Ubuntu !
What do you think ?
Thanks.

Maybe different modelines, driver versions and more between Mageia and Ubuntu?
At least a comparison of /etc/X11.xorg.conf and further files below /etc/X11.xorg.conf.d and a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be necessary to determine what modes, refresh rates and such are used on both systems.

Ubuntu/linux/xorg don't use xorg.conf it's depcrated many years ago but still works, instead of old xorg.conf it's using in these config files from.
- Code: Select all
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel/nvidia/ati.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
Mageia use it because drakx11 generate it still automatically.

And how does that help the OP?

Op don't try to find it from ubuntu.

That's why I mentioned both config methods including files below /etc/X11.xorg.conf.d and the log /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which will have the resulting configuration X server chooses dynamically.

Thank you both,
Mageia was working since the beginning in 1920x1280 24 bit. The screen firstly doesn't work any more in this resolution, but was OK in any other resolution, or 1920x1280 16 bit.
I though as Ubuntu auto-configurated in 1680x1050, so it was working.
But it wasn't for long (a few hours) because now each resolution is bad for Mageia, on the 2 PCs (screen always black even if I hit Alt+Ctrl+F2) but OK for Ubuntu (except 1920x1280, but this resolution isn't proposed).
The 17" screen is still OK everywhere.

Why don't you try with 1680x1050 on Mageia for the 24" screen? Can you show the output of
- Code: Select all
xrandr -q
please from both Ubuntu and Mageia.

Okay, Mageia seems to offer much higher refresh rates, maybe the modeline for the monitor is wrong. Can you attach or post your xorg.conf as mentioned previously, and also try after renaming it, that way you should get the same result as with Ubuntu.

I tried again this morning the 24" with Mageia in 1680x1050 and it is working! I don't know why, an unpredictable trouble on the screen, a configuration file that automatically changed, something I missed?
here is the xorg.conf

There might actually be an issue here.
A few days ago, I started seeing similar symptoms on my workstation. I have an nVidia GT 740 video card driving an HP 27" led display via HDMI. It has worked fine for years.
The symptoms I saw were the display going black for about 3 seconds, then returning. I would go for hours with no issue, then it would start doing it - and once it started, it would become more frequent.
My diagnosis included a number of things, including reinstalling the driver, then updating the nVidia driver to the latest version on their website (from 355.11 to 361.28). After unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable from the monitor, the display came up corrupted (a lot of tearing, that did not clear up) so I switched to a console and restarted the display manager. Since that time, the symptoms have not re-occured, but I only did this last evening.
The corrupted display when the HDMI was reconnected made me wonder if I had a fault appearing in my video card, but now that I see this post by someone else, I am forced to wonder if a recent software update has introduced a problem.

@Lebarhon: You have a lot of modelines in your xorg.conf, which probably comes from the fact that you selected a specific monitor model in drakx11 or in installer.
I'd advise to not use those and choose plug&play monitor generic entry, let X auto-detect those and use the configuration tool of the desktop environment to change resulutions dynamically via xrandr.
E.g. I only have this in xorg.conf, with a 24" 1920x1200 display:
- Code: Select all
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "monitor1"
VendorName "Plug'n Play"
# TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output.
# 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync
ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630
# 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync
ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616
EndSection
xrandr offers all the regular resolutions, not a huge list like in your case with refresh rates that may not all be supported by your display:
- Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia5]─[19:19:02]─[~] xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384

HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

For the last 3 days, the screen crashed about once or twice a day, mostly at the end of the day, may be a thermal problem, the screen is powered on from 8am to 13pm. At least, the behaviour is now the same for Ubuntu and Mageia, so the screen is probably dying slowly and I am going to by a new one. I set the post as solved.
Thanks again
