Kdenlive no audio in MP4 output

I am trying to format a video to upload to Youtube.

The camera I am using provides a .mov file, which I have imported and edited in kdenlive. The video from the camera is 640 x 480 format, which is high enough resolution for what I am doing. When kdenlive renders the edited video to a file, the choices it gives me for file formats are shown below.

If I render to MPEG-2, it all works fine, video and audio. If I render to MP4, only the video works. I am not familiar with the other formats. The problem is that Youtube claims to accept only the MP4 format, not the MPEG format, so I need to somehow get this thing into MP4 format in order to upload it.

Here are the CODECs that are provided for the two formats and the results of using each one.

When I look at the exif info in the files, it looks like there is audio in the mpg, but no audio in the mp4 file.

I'm not sure what to do. Record it again in a different format and try again? Look for missing CODECs? Find a converter from mpg to mp4? Fix kdenlive to render audio into the mp4 file? So far, the Google and "trial and error" are not solving the problem. Many hours wasted.

VLC- if you have it, is able to perform this function.

I have VLC installed, but I thought that it was just a player. I did not know that it will do conversions.

I am not at my Linux computer right now, but I will look tonight to see what is there.

vlc is not only a player, but it can do streaming, conversion and quite some more.

I am back at my Linux computer, and I just tried the VLC conversion.

I ended up with a mp4 file that works fine in VLC and Dragon Player, but when I play it with Xine it glitches and flashes and fairly well locks up the computer.

I have not tried to boost it to Youtube yet, so I don't know if it will work there or not. If it works on Youtube then I am good to go because that is the goal of all this. Not sure what is going on with Xine.

I did notice a strangeness in the size of the files though. The .mpg file is 25.3 MiB and the .mp4 file is 4.7 MiB. That is quite a bit of a compression from the original. I cannot see any difference in the quality even at full screen. Of course, since it was shot at 640 x 480 the quality is pretty bad anyway.

Well, that's the point of newer compression formats, original mpeg and mpeg-2 don't offer that much video compression at all.
