Can't play regular DVDs

I just installed Mageia 5 32 bit on an oldish computer but I don't have software that will run rental dvds. Why won't they play with VLC?

You probably need at least lib[64]dvdcss2 and maybe also lib(64)dvdnav4 - do you have those installed?
DVDs which have newer protection then CSS might not play at all.

How do I check?

How to check what, for which of the two sentences you quoted? As a hint, if you are quoting, only quote the relevant parts. The quote button is not meant for direct replies, as it's pretty useless to use fullquotes just to reply to the previous post.

If you're asking how to check if you have lib[64]dvdcss2 and maybe also lib(64)dvdnav4 installed
Code: Select all
rpm -qa| grep -iE "dvdcss|dvdnav"

I didn't really understand any of it. I may have been using Linux for a couple of years but that doesn't mean any of it has sunk in. I would have thought a link to the missing software or an explanation why I can play them in Mint and not what I was of the opinion is a superior set up (admittedly on a less potent machine.)

Thanks for the help though I will try all that tonight. I am heading towards being late again today if I start messing now. You are much appreciated though.

Any of what in particular? Please be a little more verbose about what you're asking for in particular.

You never asked for a link. I told you the probably reasons why you cannot play it currently. Maybe Mint installs libdvdcss by default, no clue. Also you never asked why you can play it under Mint and not under Mageia.
Sorry but I cannot read your mind.

Naturlicht I am a thaumaturge of singular proficiency -any magician should have recognised that. (Not gloating BTW, I only work with planets. Lesser computers are mere desk top ornamentation/paperweights for me all too often. But at least they can be classed as mobile.)
