SOLVED--graphic card fails on wake from sleep after update

Postby leon244 » Jul 26th, '25, 16:15

I just did the update to Nvidia 570.172.08
since doing the update, my screen stays black after the system is awakened from being in sleep mode or hibernate.
To get the screen back I have to reboot the system.
The screen is blank and does not respond. I cannot see a console if I try to go to another tty

Hi there, I've got a pretty similar chipset/graphics card and can reproduce, screen stays black after resume from standby.
Although I'm able to switch the display back on by going to tty12 (which does forward all journal logs to the tty, cf. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy ... /dev/tty12)
and then switching back and forth between tty1, tty2 and tty7 where X should be running.

Seems the issue is that plasmashell does coredump, then later kwin_x11.
With older nvidia versions it just used to display "desktop effects were restarted due to a graphics reset"

In the meantime you could check some of the options in /etc/modprobe.d/display-driver.conf
fbdev=1 seems to be the new default, whereas this is listed as experimental in our config, you may need to set this to fbdev=0

Thank you. I tried this, but when I get back to the X it is corrupted and shows only the background and one unresponsive app.
I can get to a login by finally going to tty4 but then I just use it to reboot in an orderly fashion

My display-driver.conf has the fbdev=1 commented out
Code: Select all
# Create a framebuffer device (experimental)
#options nvidia-drm fbdev=1

So I guess for now I will not go into sleep mode until this bug is resolved.

Yes, our config might be outdated there, you can try switching it to fbdev=0 which we had previously, as the driver defaults seem to have changed.

Well I added
Code: Select all
options nvidia-drm fbdev=0
to my display-driver.conf file and it fixed the problem!
Thank you. system now wakes from sleep and works.
