[SOLVED]sddm shows nothing but a black screen & cursor

Postby mackowiakp » Nov 30th, '23, 14:00

M9 fresh installation. Firmat root and home.
After installation fresh system and post-install upgrade to kernel 6.5.11 (and other apps) SDDM shows black screen and cursor.
Before kernel upgrade fresh system worked properly.
lspci shows:
Code: Select all
VGA compatible controller : NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)

I googled through forum and I know that is common issue.
But solutions I found does not work.
What todo?

My/our mistake
We let the 6.5 kernels out before the update of nvidia470, which is needed for 6.5...

The nvidia470 is up now however, so please update.

To get to desktop, you can either boot the elder (6.4 series) kernel, or select select nouveau or Xorg modesetting graphics driver for 6.5 kernels.

I guess your failed boot ended with selecting modesetting, but that is not always working perfectly.

I can fully reinstall system. But I use ISO (very current downloaded 12h ago or so) file which needs to be updated after install. So how can I use updated driver/kernel version.? Network install?

In the grub boot menu choose the elder (6.4) kernel, does it also go to black screen?

You may need to boot to maintenance mode, run drakx11 to set nouveau or xorg modesetting to use that temporarily, until updated then in MCC change back to 470 ("legacy")

Well it is still the original version, with nvidia470 and kernel working together...
which needs to be updated after install. So how can I use updated driver/kernel version.? Network install?

You can choose to use online repos during install (EDIT: - if so do not forget "nonfree updates", in which nvidia drivers are. /EDIT)

Or you can do a full update after install.

Provided your mirror is updated (https://mirrors.mageia.org/status) now it can not go wrong (tm) as an updated nvidia470 (470.223.02-1) is in updates repo.

I have no possibility to boot from 6.4 because no such option in boot menu after upgrade to 6.5
So what I have to do?
- install M9 (6.4 kernel)
- switch video to nouveau
- full update
- reboot that is using 6.5
shuld work?

That is very weird!

When in boot menu, select "Advanced options for Mageia", enter, and do you not get a list of the now two installed kernels? (and for each, two options: maintenance mode or not)

So what I have to do?
- install M9 (6.4 kernel)
- switch video to nouveau
You shold not need to switch to nouveau if you get the updated nvidia470.

- full update
- reboot that is using 6.5
shuld work?

Asolutely, or enable updates repos during install, as i told.

EDIT, adding:
For other users going this part: when reinstalling, i think you can choose to repair the installation, having Core_Updates and Nonfree_Updates repos enabled. - should be quick.

Hello,
Is this also solved?

Can you provide the result of
Code: Select all
systemctl status shorewall.service

as root

Code: Select all
[root@maciek Pobrane]# systemctl status shorewall.service
○ shorewall.service - Shorewall IPv4 firewall
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/shorewall.service; disabled; preset: enabled)
     Active: inactive (dead)

However, the problem with SDDM remains.
However, the problem seems unresolved
After rebooting the system several times (due to restoring data and applications), the login screen was distorted but it was possible to enter the password.
Again, after several logins with a distorted login screen, I finally got a black screen with a mouse pointer.
I changed from CLI (Alt+Ctl+F2) login to automatic and everything works, but of course there is no login.
What to do about it, what logs should I send, etc. to solve the problem?

It seems you are running without firewall !
Can you run, as root:
Code: Select all
/usr/libexec/iptables.init start
systemctl start shorewall.service
systemctl status shorewall.service

Does this solve the start of shorewall?

Is it necessary? Formerly it worked without firewall.
It is because my desktop managing whole network (in fact two PC in case of failure one of them) is connected to Cisco 48 port switch with IP filtering traffic build in.
So this switch is used as firewall for both PC`c and rest of LAN and VLAN`s.
Notice that second PC - M9 based too - works properly. Both have the same configuration and application set.
The only difference between PC`s is graphic card. This working properly is laptop with Intel graphic card.
The second has NVIDIA card.

Then why don't you simply disable shorewall?
In any case, please open a separate thread for that as there's no relation to your issue with sddm here.

Best provide logs from a fresh boot. It would be helpful if you could run
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab > /tmp/journal.log
as root, after waiting a few minutes for SDDM to appear, and then later attach /tmp/journal.log here.
