[SOLVED] Black Background

[SOLVED] Black Background

Postby duder » Oct 9th, '14, 11:36

I had made a post several months ago about missing Icon's on my desktop. I figured out how to reset my screen resolution and get them back.
It does this about every other boot. No idea why but its annoying but everything works.

Yesterday it seemed stuck on the Mageia 4 screen and never booted. I pressed cont + alt + delete and it faded to black and skype launched and Firefox launched from my last session.
The background stayed black for about 2 or 3 minutes and now its back as I started this post, of course.

And now I notice Sykpe is not connecting..AARRGG!

Any idea why this is acting this way?

Thanks!

I'm not sure that this will help, but if you are using KDE set the Session Manager to always start with an empty session.
System Settings > Startup and shutdown > Session Management

(I've also found it desirable on some systems to exit from running programs (especially non-KDE programs such as Firefox, Skype and Libreoffice) before shutting down or re-booting. Those programs may not always be closed properly otherwise.)

It's also possible, however, that you are having the same problem as reported here:

Jim,
I'll try that. After I closed out Firefox I noticed a battery charge status alert on my task bar. My computer is an Acer all in one and does not have a battery. So I disabled that, but that didn't seem to help.
This morning I watched it real close. It came to the last splash screen and hung. After a couple minutes I pressed Alt + F4 and it went black and Skype just kept trying to connect. After another minute or so the normal desktop appeared. I had to stop and restart Skype. So I will stop Skype from starting at boot.
Thanks!!

I checked out the link and I do remember that dbus I think was the last update before this started.
I disable the Sykpe from starting plus many reboots and it seems to be working somewhat normally.
My resolution still changes about every other start up, that's where my Icon's go missing.
Thanks!

Actually this is not solved.

It still randomly boots to a black screen, then I cont+alt+del and select restart it will boot fine the second time.
I have notice another thing... I have power management disabled and I have a screen saver selected. However
after about 5 minutes of inactivity the screen goes black and stays that way, no screen saver. It will wake up but not sure
if this could be related when it boots.

If you are using KDE - and I presume you are, though I do not see in your messages where you explicitly said that - then your black screen is most probably caused by a failure of plasma-desktop to load or to keep running.

You should investigate that. Easiest way is, when you have the symptom, to open a Konsole window (or else invoke the command tool - alt-F2 - if it will invoke) and enter the command "plasma-desktop" and see what happens. If you do this in Konsole, you'll get useful debug messages whether it starts or not. You also should look in ~/.xsession-errors for information.
