[SOLVED] Hp laptop, Video not waking up from Sleep mode

Postby LaCiccia » Apr 4th, '13, 11:14

Hello,
For the past few days I've been experimenting with Mageia 2 i586 after installing it on my hp dv6385ea notebook on a dual-boot system with Win7. There's a problem with waking up the laptop from sleep mode, just like this other user.
If I do some browsing with Mozilla FF or Google Chrome, maybe dowload some wallpaper and then put it to sleep, when I wake up the pc, the screen brightens up but it's all black, no icons or desktop can be seen. Instead if I put it to sleep soon after booting into the system, then it wakes up correctly. It's as if the computer's saying "Please don't use too many applications!"

I've tried getting back the desktop by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F2, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace(twice) but to no avail. Every time I must restart the whole system by pressing the ON/OFF button. I'm afraid in the long run this is going to harm the memory (RAM 2GB)

So far I've uninstalled "akonadi" and "Nepomuk" packages to speed up the KDE desktop a little bit, as instructed here.
My graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce something. I'll try to find out the exact model number, if needed. Please see attached picture for a list of graphic-card drivers that Mageia has installed.
I think this problem maybe related to the Nvidia graphic card because I once experienced this same problem with an old version of Ubuntu.
To save some time I'm reporting below the results to some diagnostic Konsole commands:

Hi,
Sorry for the lengthy post.
I found that I a have an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphic card.
Does this help, to help me?

Your repositories maybe part of the problem as you have

CD-ROM
Core Updates
Nonfree Updates and
Tainted Updates

Missing are

Core Release
Nonfree Release and
Tainted Release

If the rpm's needed for proper operation are not on the CD-ROM and have not been updated the system has no way of finding them.

Are you sure they're missing? If they were missing, why are they present in the list at all?
How do I install them?
I only have the "Mageia 2 i586 DVD" I burned after downloading Mageia from the official page.

See
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... nd_updates
for how to set up repositories but you've probably been there and choose "Update Sources" instead of "Full set of sources".

The problem is that you probably need the Nvidia driver from Nonfree for your card and while the latest version is likely in Nonfree Updates it may depend on other rpm's from Nonfree Release and even Core Release.

So set up a full set of sources then configure your display in MCC "Mageia Control Centre" and see if the problem persists.

Hi there,
I managed to solve the problem, now the waking up issue is gone! (I hope for good)
I installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers by going to MCC > Hardware > Set up the graphical server > Nvidia 6100 to GeForce 360. At this point I had to insert the CD-ROM of Mageia. It installed the needed packages and allowed me to configure some of the settings. After rebooting, I tried some browsing and other activity then put it to sleep mode and tried waking it up. Problem solved!

I also followed the wiki you linked me. After clearing up all the repositories already present (including "CD-ROM" and except "chrome") I opted to add "Full set of sources". I ticked the ones you told me to select, cleared up those I didn't need and now my list of repositories looks like the picture I'm attaching.

So, thank you for your help. Marking the thread as "solved" and moving on to the next issue.
