Xserver not working

Xserver not working

Postby dollyknot » Mar 28th, '13, 16:33

Hello,
I have been a user of Mandriva for many years and after paying for it, I'm not too happy with it for more than one reason, so am giving Mageia a try.

I've managed to get it installed on an external USB disk drive, with the desire to retain my original Mandriva home partition on my internal hard drive, the problem is the Xserver is not starting and it says there is a problem, all I get is a konsole with the message to start drakx11 in root, that fires up ok, I select the display I want then select reboot and the same thing happens again.

I know Mageia installs ok on my PC, if I let it do a full install, ie create it's own home partition on an external hard drive, but that is not what I want, the fact that it will mount my Mandriva home partition means I'm part way there, all I want is the Xserver settings as well.

So any help I can get, getting startx to work, will be gratefully received.

Regards,

Peter.

which MGA are you using (2,3 live, DVD)?
which graphic card do you have?

if MGA2, have you read the errata?
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Errata#Proprietary_graphics_card_drivers

can we see the Xorg error message?
have you already tried to start with the VESA driver?

I used the dual CD.

I'm using an Intel graphics card, which it uses ok if I let it do a full install ie setup a Mageia home partition on the external drive. I will try with the VESA driver.

Thanks for your help.

Peter.

Also startx shouldn't be used anymore, or well, let's say it's not fully supported anymore.
What you should definitely do is create a new user and use that to log in, and then migrate your settings over piece by piece.
