[SOLVED] Can' t play DVDs with DragonPlayer or Totem

Postby tofuzius » Jun 20th, '12, 12:16

Hi,

I am new to Mageia. I installed Mageia2 on my Laptop a few days ago and I like it very much.

Unfortunately, my DVDs do not want to play with DragonPlayer and Totem. I installed libdvdcss2 and mplayer from tainted repos, but it does not work, yet.
After installing Smplayer I was able to watch my movies with it. But maybe someone can help me to fix the default-players.

Thanks in advance and please excuse my bad english.

All the best from rainy Cologne Germany
Björn

Thank you for fast reply.

It is no problem to play DVDs at all. Smplayer also does a good. I just thought it would be a good thing, to let do the default player this job, by installing some additional packages, setting a missing symlink or something like that instead of installing another frontend.

I see where you are comming from, but in my opinion, (and only mine for now)

the default players are more about whats default for the desktop system.

This does not nessasarily mean its what on install people continue to use.

That sounds horrible as it means some newby users to Mageia may find that the installed apps

are not great and move on.

But I suspect like in windows (when i have to use it) first thing i do is uninstall msmedia player and install vlc

and im guessing this is same for alot of people.

would be nice if we could pole for what are the most common apps used by everyone, and settle on a list that everyone likes, but you know where that will end up, a thread 100 pages long argueing

so maybe the best aproach is dont install anything by default.

I see. But that does not mean that DragonPlayer can not play DVDs like VLC or MPlayer.
I solved the problem now by installing som gstreamer-packages: the good, the bad, the ugly, menu-support, decoders and some others.
I am not sure, which of them are necassary in detail, but it made the dragon fly. ;) That is all I wanted. :)

Best regards
