video crashs after full screen game closure

I went to file this in bugzilla but the form layout didnt seem to suit what I want to say
as it probably is specific to my hardware
however the problem is this

when I close a full screen game like powermanga, supertux, starfighter
sometimes but not all the time - the video crashes leaving me with a blank screen
at times I am still left with sound, just no video output, ie the screen is totally blank

I try to control. alt, backspace to recover and sometimes this works and sometimes not
when it doesn't I have to hard restart the computer with the power button
when it does work it is 50 /50 whether I am returned to my desktop or back to the login screen

my hardware is motherboard gigabyte H61M-S2P-B3 with 4 g RAM, i5 processor

this problem does not happen with windowed programmes, only fullscreen
sometimes it happens when I open the fullscreen game
