Mageia 9 seems nice!
Posted: Sep 7th, '24, 03:01Hi, I'm not new to GNU/Linux, I've been using it close to exclusively for almost fifteen years. This isn't to say that I know anything though. I'm a fairly basic user. I use it because it works for me the way I want it to, which some other alternative operating systems don't.
Been a member here since 2012 which was when I was still working out how Linux worked, what I liked, and distro hopping. I didn't stick around here long. I didn't like Mageia much back then. Since I made this account back then, I think that has removed the ability to make a new thread on the welcome board. That's why I'm posting this here.
When I first tried Mageia, I was turned off mainly by issues I had with net_applet. I'm not going to lie. I still don't like it. Following the instructions on the wiki sort me out quickly, and Networkmanager is working perfectly, so no issue.
I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello.
I'm Knightron, I begun using GNU/Linux sometime in 2010. I distro hopped around for a while and eventually settled on openSUSE. I like set release distros that offer stability and at least a year support.
I've used openSUSE as my primary operating system for ten years at this point. openSUSE recently has been going through lots of changes that have made me very insecure about its future, or at least about its set release model which is what I rely on. Pushing immutable structure, questionable support in the future, name change. To me, it seems like an impending break down to finally say it's the end.
I could be wrong, but that's my interpretation, and I want to leave ship before it it sinks.
It's been a while, but I've begun distro hopping again. It's a bit of an eye opener actually. Realise how much of a noob I am because other distros do things differently to what I've grown used of.
Initially I had thought MX was alright but for some reason I always have audio issues on my laptop with Debian based distros and MX was no different.
I had tried openMandriva and I really enjoyed it. Honestly had no complaints what so ever. Observing it's release structure, it looks like it's taking a similar path to openSUSE and focusing on rolling release however, so I thought that I'd just look at what else is around. I'm not going to lie. I really hated Mageia every other time I tried it. After reading about it a little more and understanding that it actually seems to put more focus on set release, I decided to give it another go and work harder on myself to fix the issues that come up.
So I've done that, and honestly there's basically no issues at this point and Mageia 9 seems really nice. I'm really enjoying it.

Thanks to the devs for making such a stella distro. When I get some spare coin, which will probably be in about December, I'll make a donation.
