Hello everyone!

I think Mandrake was the first Linux distro i ever tried (8.2 Bluebird), but due to my machine being so old-tech at the time i didn't keep it on there for more than a day or so. That taster whetted my appetite to the world beyond my Windows though, and since then i've dabbled in many flavours of Linux including Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Puppy, BLAG, Mint, Peppermint, Fedora... and now Mageia 1, and I thank you all very much for it!
Despite all the above, i'm still a slave to Windows OS, largely because i never got 'under the bonnet' with any of the distros i tried, to resolve issues such as no sound in Ardour or Rosegarden (why would audacity give me sound out, and these wouldn't?), then there was gaming, and later wi-fi issues....
...anyway here i am with Mageia running very nicely indeed on my netbook ....and with a few questions to ask (in the relevant section!).

Welcome and don't hesitate to ask all kinds of questions!

By reading your presentation it strekes me that we have very many users who join us after a short or long odyssee through the various distributions. Hopefully all of you will find your Ithaka at Mageia! :)

Hey all,

I run anything other than Windows (Yes, I am a Mac user and BSD user too), although I do have Windows due to some technicality with a company I deal with wanting me to have it. So it is partitioned to a small corner of the HDD. Anyway, I got into Linux in a big ways years back when I dabbled in RedHat Linux 9, I didn't fully get into it so I ended up not using it. Eventually I go into Ubuntu and rekindled my love for linux. From there I went to CentOS to try a EL distro, then openSUSE then SalixOS & Slackware and Arch. I ran Lubuntu on a low end laptop I used as a testing ground before putting SalixOS on with lxde which was cool to run in the downtime between my old laptop and my new laptop.

I found with the broadcom devices in my laptop I didn't want to spend hours configuring and compiling the drivers myself as my time is short to be doing those things nowadays. However I wanted to try something different and thought I'd give Mageia a try. I loved the livecd that I've now got it running as my primary distro on my laptop. I never used Mandriva so those who used to use it and migrated over, I don't really know why but I'm not complaining. I love Mageia and I am willing to give my full support behind the project and help in any way possible. :D

P.S. I and some friends are in the process of rebuilding our website we made for Linux distros. I write articles on linux distros comparing them to other distros and other OS' outside of Linux and show their pros and cons. I also write up reviews on packages being released and am building my own repository for rpm based distros linked to the site. I may be able to help in some way either in writing up news posts or public relations or whatever you might need help with.

Hello,
I have been using Mageia a few days now. Initially I caused a problem with installation with the Grub loader.
Now it is lovely. I used used Mandriva since 2010, before that Fedora, Redhat 7.2.

How is Mageia pronounced isn't the "g" hard?

Cheers

Great. :D

I think numbers only will be better.Names will work a litte confusing. I know that of Mint, Ubuntu etc.
Often one forgets what name was what number.

Ma-gay-uh. With the accent on the second syllable.

A soft 'g' just doesn't seem right there (to me).

It's a Greek word and should be pronounced as such. The problem is: I asked 3 Greek people and received 3 different pronounciations! :)

1. muh-jei-a (where "jei" is pronounced like the first syllable in "jive" - this is different to classical Greek rules where a following vocal "makes a g hard" - different to languages with Roman origin)
2. muh-gei-a (where "gei" is pronounced like the first syllable in "Gyver" (as the famous McGyver)) - the most likely version according to pronounciation rules.
3. muh-gee-a (where "gee" is pronounced like in "geek")

Although IMHO it makes no difference we should try to follow the pronounciation rules of the original language - same as with Linux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IfHm6R5le0)

Hello fellow Mageia users,

I am new in mageia, but in mandriva already know from the mandriva version 10. I now move to mageia. I will try to install mageia to my old laptop (Toshiba Satellite L30), the laptop is most difficult when installed linux mainly on the sound system and graphics who are not always detected. in mandriva version 10 everything works well only on the sound system a little tweaking in the kernel

I'm downloading it now, and hopefully I enjoy here :D

best regards...

I had problems with recording sound there where things go right in other distro's.
And I took a time-out with Mageia.

I'm curious what your adventures will be.
Let us know please! :D

Greetings all. I am a kiwi (ex Christchurch) living on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia. My Linux history starts with early Red Hat, Mandrake, Mandriva, and now I see Mageia as the natural progression of this excellent line of operating systems. My DVD is on the way from New Zealand, and I can't wait to get Magic up and running. I have only praise for Mandrake/Mandriva - especially when they didn't cave in to Microsoft like others did. Merci

wobo - thanks for the welcome. I left Christchurch in 2005. Still have one daughter and family in south Christchurch, a son and family, sister and brother and inlaws in one of the worst hit areas. Tragic.

nigelc - gidday. know your town well - got a better rugby stadium than Christchurch !. shame to lose Ma'a Nonu, one of the best players in the current RWC.
