Hello everyone. I am new to Mageia, not to Linux. I had used Mandrake years ago and left after I saw the direction things where going in when it was merged with Connectiva, (though I first thought it was going to be great.) I use to love Mandrake. I always wanted to try Mandriva in recent years but I never knew what was going on with that distro. All I knew was that there was a lot of issues about needing money, wanting money or whatever. The whining really got to me so I just left it alone. Needless to say I was very happy when I heard of the plans about Mageia. Well I finally got to installing it, Mageia 3 RC(KDE). Things are off to a great start and I look forward to seeing where all of this goes.

I currently use Debian SID(Gnome 3) and Fedora 18 XFCE Spin (Will be upgrading to the latest releases of Fedora as they come.) I also have SME server installed on a private server/gateway. Going at this pace Mageia will rank right up there with my favorites soon, Fedora and Debian. I still need to check it out more but I am really liking it so far. Great job to all involved in making this happen.

Thanks. I turned around and went in the back to get that donut and coffee you so graciously offered. It was dark, light bulb blew. After stepping in the litter box I decided that I really didn't need the coffee or donut. But thanks anyways ;)

With the sound of water dripping and my footsteps echoing through out the deep dark cavern, yeah I think I did... Ok, I just lost myself with all of this. How many people know of caves with litter boxes and electricity let alone doughnuts and coffee? I think I am done now.

Hi and Welcome Roger :D

Yes, I've *never* had a Linux installation go so quickly and smoothly. But what I really like about Mageia is the community governance. :) Hope you'll feel the same way.

Hey Everyone,

I have been distro hopping for the past 12 years... looking for a place to settle and call home. Going to join y'all for a little while and see what things are all about here. So thanks for having me ahead of time. For those who wonder. Crunchbang is my Distro of choice at this time. But it just doesn't have that warm fuzzy feeling of home.

Kindest Regards,
Tim Apple

I'm distrohopping again, but I'll be giving mageia soon in a couple of days. For a long time I was using fedora mainly for for it's breath of developers and packagers, but it's a constant update cycle. I've been trying crunchbang and I think it's downright quick and snappy, but its openbox gui takes some getting used to (I used xfce instead). Changing the browser to the real firefox version took some googling but it's possible for both the 32 and 64 bit version. I got put off on trying to install the nvidia installer, I just didn't want to edit scripts anymore like in slackware. I tried the live 64 bit version 2 of mageia and it detected the nvidia graphics and installed it. With that positive experience, I'll be giving the next upgrade version a try.

Greetings. I've been using Linux for 10 years now (since April 2003). I remember it almost like yesterday - downloading Mandrake 9.1 off a friend's broadband connection and burning the disks. Good times :-).

Anyway, I was ready for a new distribution recently and decided to download and install Mageia 3. It certainly is working nicely so far; I installed the Gnome version. There were some minor quirks in the default Gnome setup in my opinion such as the default GTK theme being Oxygen-gtk instead of Adwaita; which made things look a little off in the interface, but a simple change with the gnome-tweak-tool fixed that.

Also, I would like to say how impressed I am with the community. This is definitely one of the more transparent and welcoming of communities that I've seen in regards to Linux distributions. I've read the community pages and look forward to getting involved down the road.

Thank you to everyone involved for making an excellent distribution!

Long time Linux user new to Mageia

Postby artee » Jun 15th, '13, 14:20

Well, seems I had to do something since my Mandriva boxes were not getting updated any more...
So I was glad to find Mageia has really gotten traction, and more importantly, still sort of feels like home. Lots of things have changed though.

My name is Rob, I've used the nick artee (and aRTee) since forever on Linux / Mandrake / Mandriva related forums - more Mandrivausers than the official Mandriva forums I guess. Perhaps some here remember me from there. Or from my once popular (Mandrake/Mandriva) related web site - from before people did 'blogs'. I got onto slashdot a couple of times, with mandrake reviews.

I was also reporting bugs quite a bit and contributing to the internationalisation efforts, translating strings to Dutch. BTW I'm Dutch and naturalised Swiss, living in Switzerland.

At some point after getting married, I got kids, had no more time, and dropped off the radar.

Now I'm not really 'back' in the sense that I don't have time to push for Linux world domination as I once did (have time, not that much push...) and the world has changed (Linux dominates the tablet and phone market mostly through android already). And Linux has changed...
I had to relearn how things work, due to systemd having replaced SysV init, journalctl having made /var/log/messages disappear, and probably plenty of other things that I'm not onto yet, since stuff just works.

One thing that doesn't work: my Kobil home banking dongle - may have to turn to Ubuntu for that one, unless I find out how to make it work under Mageia...

Wow, the vibes in this forum! :)

Hi all, I have been with Mageia since day 1, having earlier started as a Mandrake 9 user. Never really felt the need to hop on to any other distro. I am looking forward to contributing in more ways than I have been - one of them being frequenting the forum more.

I make my living working on computers. And when I am not working working, I just surf the interwebs, following technology trends.

Glad to meet you all.

Cheers.
