Long time Mandrake/Mandriva user. Tried Mageia RC2 on my Panasonic Toughbook and is a sure winner! So far the best distro to run on that Laptop.

Mageia is a keeper.

BTW, tons of familiar faces here.

I waited for the 2nd release. Mandy was good enough about 2010.2 after that took a huge dive like the Buran Space Shuttle.

Forgot to add, been using Mandy since 1999; that is how far back is.

And to say even more for been such a great distro I never trully learned how to use the Command Console. I see Mageia works like Magic (pun intended).

Hello and greetings from Texas, USA. I have been using Linux for several years, starting with Red Hat 8. More recently using Arch and Mint. This is my first go with Mageia / Mandriva. So far so good.

Hi everyone from London, UK!!!

I was always a Mandriva fan and when they lost there way I began to distro hop quite frequently but never really being 100% satisfied. Now I've started to use Mageia and it just feels like home.
I'd like to get involved to give something back to the community so I'll frequent these forums and maybe join the QA or documentation team - first time I'll be getting involved with a distro :)

That sounds familiar: Mageia feels like home for me, too :D

Mageia is the first distro I contribute to, too :)

So a very warm welcome, p_d_robo :D

QA and documentation team can use your help very well, you might want to consider joining both teams ;)

Hi there,

I'm one of those people who just can't keep their fingers out of the system. For that reason I randomly make a mess of my setup. That's fine as long as it can be fixed again.
(mostly it can be fixed...) :P

Tried my first distro back in '95. Couldn't really make things work the way I wanted to so I ran away again to that other operating system. Jumped on the wagon when Mandrake 7.2 came out, and started working more and more with Linux as my OS.
Finally in 2002 I began doing most of my computing in Linux, and as a result got more and more curious about the inner workings of the system itself.
Used a lot of different distros along the way. To name a few: Mandrake, Ubunutu, gentoo, arch, debian and now Mageia. I also shortly used LFS, slackware and suse. Some stayed a while on my PC, others were as fast to be tossed out again as I had installed them.

I must admit I tried Mageia 1 when it became available, but didn't really feel at home with it. Now I'm giving Mageia 2 a try and we'll see how it goes. My main reason for trying it out again is that I am in a phase where I'd like a quiet life "system wise", so I can concentrate my effort on some other things like my server setup (debian) and updating and extending my homepage.

When I was active in the Mandriva community I was listed under the username Kechara. I've since been told that I look a little mad, so hence I'm using my current username instead in most forums I'm a member of.
I will try to help out with this project, but don't expect too much. My work steals a lot of my spare time, and I have a couple of other projects I need to work on as well.
Looking through this thread I can see that a lot of the old Mandrake/Mandriva community people can be found here as well. I feel I'm at home already. :D

Great 8-)

Welcome, madeye :D

You won't recognise me, although I did use Mandrake and Mandriva. I've never been an (active) Mandrake or Mandriva community member. In spite of that, I felt home very fast in the Mageia community. Enjoy being here, madeye ;)

Hello all,

My name is John and I am from Missouri USA. I'm 47 and been into computers since I was 15. My friends, mostly who I taught are the kind that takes the 100 Mhz CPU and run it 2x50Mhz bus instead of 3x33Mhz bus. That was the days. I guess I am a M* guy from the start as my first Linux was Redhat which the rest were forked from.

I don't remember what my first Redhat was but I still have the 3+ inch thick manual for RH6. I plan to read up on the console stuff because much of it still applies even though the graphics examples are way far out dated, thank god. Well, there was PHAT Linux that ran inside Windows and I looked at it and could see I wanted the real thing.

I read about all the rest and picked RH. Well, RH was heading straight for the bank and I found Mandrake. My first installs didn't last long as I played with everything. I broke it so many times, sometimes beyond repair, that I learned how to fix it or at least what not to do.

wobo said earlier that the users are just as important as anyone else. They can report, evaluate etc. Sometimes not knowing anything about something is a plus. I have a friend I gave Mandriva 2011, then switched him to MGA2 like myself so I can hold his hand and check what he tells me.

He loves it and his mind is not all mixed up with "how other distros do it". I'm loving Mageia and try to stop by to help those I can. When I heard of Mandrivas troubles, well, like seeing an old friend have hard times. When I heard mageia was a fork directly of Mandriva...I felt better.

Someone else said they just dabble...I'm a bit beyond what most are because I know there is still RH stuff in Mageia and I do have a little DOS under my belt.

As for MS...I get so tired of that and Linux bashing. The fact is, if Linux had 10% of the corporate backing that MS has...well, the argument would be over. Chrome Books. How many people know why "It don't slow down over time" & "has built in security"?

That Windows Registry has to be the worst idea ever! Remember .ini files that resided in the program folder and stored user options? I really like Win7, and if it were not for two things, being MS and that behemoth registry problem then it might be an OS to look into...but the viruses etc.

My prediction? Win8 is gonna flop like a dead mackerel (Like Vista) and I think Linux on the desktop is growing no matter what people say.

I'd love to see Linux get to just 20% of the desktop/laptop market so they could throw enough weight around to be treated fairly. My friend loves his and the speed and freedom to roam with no virus threat. I know there is a small one...but with MS you're sure to get one if you leave the beaten path.

I'm also into FTA satellite TV and have quite a nice setup to receive programming from all over the world. I watch Russia Today News a lot and a few others. I built my X4 Phenom II to do video editing from the HD PVR.

Best of luck to Mageia and I'll continue to help when I can.

Hi yankee495 (John),

A very warm welcome and thanks a lot for all your help :D

I'm into FTA satellite TV, too, although since I started contributing to Mageia I haven't upgraded my tuner due to a severe lack of time ;). I use the open source Linux software from http://openpli.org/

Cheers,

Hello people,
My name is Paul and I'm also from Missouri, USA. I've only been using Linux for 4 maybe 5 months now ( I know, newbie ).
I started using Mandriva 2011 but quickly turned to Mageia 2 from the help from a good friend, Yankee495, and he has helped me considerably! I'm really impressed with the way MGA2 runs on my laptop, Acer Aspire 5733-4851, as I haven't had as many problems as I have read in some of these posts.
I may not be a wizard or guru, as some people say, but I do plan on using Linux from here on out. I want to thank the people from Mageia and others on here that have posted really good advice and keep up the good work!!

TIA
Paul :ugeek:

Hello to all magicians.

My name is Damyan. I'm 28 years old and I'm from Bulgaria.

I started playing with GNU/Linux operating systems in late 2008. Till end of 2009 I have tried several distributions (Ubuntu, Open Suse, Debian, Fedora, Puppy Linux and more). As a Windows XP user and Linux newbie i have used them for 2-3 days. Then I found Arch Linux. I decided that i have to learn a lot if I want to use GNU/Linux distro for everyday computing and started learning with more technical distro such Arch. Now I'm happy Arch Linux user, but try something else from time to time. My home system is triple boot now - Arch, CentOS and Mageia (started from end of May 2012 with its second release).

I boot my system to Mageia from time to time and I really like it. It's solid, stable and user friendly. I think that it will gain more and more users and popularity in the fiture. Arch Linux is my primary choise, but my forecast is that in next 5 years Mageia will be the most popular Desktop distribution.

So, happy summer to everyone :)

Hi!
I'm new here too. I'm 18, from Spain. I started with Linux some years ago and I have tried a lot of distros, I have been using Ubuntu, but I hate the upgrades! Always fail! So I was looking for a stable and user friendly distro, and I have found it, this is the best I have ever used! I'll join in the spanish translation team to help.
