Hi, new here from Texas

Howdy from Texas. I am new here, but I have some history since I used Mandrake 7.1 back in the day when it was the newbie friendly distro. I have limited Linux knowledge, so I might ask so questions that have been beaten to death. I currently have three Linux machines (all System 76), two of which (Lemur Pro and Darter Pro 7) have Mint. My older Darter Pro (6) is becoming my testing machine, and I plan on trying Mageia. The issue with System 76 is their Coreboot does not like certain distros, and really does not like anything other than a 5.4+ Kernel. Before that you get no wifi, lights, or just no boot at all. My biggest questions will be around command line syntax since I am so used to "Apt" command. But I recall the old Mandrake Linux with great fondness. Being old, I remember the time before PC computers. Thanks all, and I look forward to making good friends here.

Much welcome, murphcid :)

No questions are stupid (...but please search forum and wiki first ;) )

You know you can dump the Mageia Live ISO files to USB stick and boot from them to get an idea it it will work?
(Of course performance is much depending on the speed of the USB stick and interface.)
See "Live ISOs" under https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_8_Rel ... tion_media
This reminds me I really should finish my writing https://wiki.mageia.org/en/User:Morgano ... ve_systems

Mageia support many desktop systems. On slower computers i prefer xfce. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Desktop_environments

as just a user of 20+ years, I regularly use the GUIs for a lot of system setup work.

apart from urpm(i or e), used for package management, most CLI stuff should translate directly.

for more package management info, have a look here => viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4231

Thank you. This is a silly question, is SUDO installed in Mageia 8 or do I have to install it? I use SUDO a lot in Mint, and it is such a handy program. I also really like to use Flatpaks. Thank you all for the warm welcome.

There are no silly questions. sudo is usually installed but not configured by default, have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Configuring_sudo

Burning the ISO and I will attempt the installation tonight. Tried to load three times, it failed each time claiming that it could not find some core functions on the screen where you have the network, time zone, etc set up. I am not sure what is the issue, I will have to try later. I suspect it is the Coreboot from System 76 since this machine has the Generation one Coreboot.

Hi

you appear to have attempted to install the "Classical" install version:

.

Which "core functions" are an issue?
some may be able to be set up after install.
