[SOLVED] "Mark forums read" button.....

Hi,

When you are in the "Board Index" view of the forums, you have a button "Mark forums read".
At mandrivauser.de we have that button also in the "Active posts" and "Unread posts" views, which is very helpful. Could we have that functionality in the Mageia forums as well?

Thanks,

Oliver

I would like to see that feature as well.

This is a manual customization I did in mandrivauser.de. I did more such customizations like adding a "Go to bottom" link in thread view, etc.
Must be done by somebody who has writing access to the forum software (which I don't have).

Not wishing to offend anyone or to appear discourteous but from what I've just read in another topic, it strikes me that those who have administrator access and the necessary skills don't have the necessary time to do the administration whilst those that don't, may have the necessary time.

Just trying to make a bit of constructive critiscm :)

As I wrote it is not about admin rights in the forum, it is about write access to the software on the server. I understand that sysadmins do not want to give such permissions easily.
Of course I also see the necessity of a balance between the need for security and the need for operability.

Not all modifications need write access to the system.
For example, all BBCode enhancements can be done by anybody with access to the ACP.

I'm not 100% sure but I think maat is the only one with access. I can only access the moderator tools.

Yes, there is maat (who handles all forum things) and also AshLeDombos and misc (who is rather sysadmin than forum admin). I don't know AshLeDombos' position in this context.

It looks like forumadmin is the only one with permission to write to the software.
But I'm willing to bet that that username is sombody else's sockpuppet.

It's the default "username" of the guy who installed the forum (aka misc or maat) which could have been personalized during setup. But writing access to the forum software is not a right which is given inside the forum, it is given by sysadmin team and could be given to anybody not even listed in the forum team list.

Well forumadmin is not a guy... it's a low level account we'd use in case of true emergency. Not really supposed to be used. And will be kocked as soon as forum is considered stable and customization nearly done.

Ashledombos is my backup as forum admin though he's got currently less time than expected.

Mods are cool and everything but when you need to add several mods they don't always go well together. If you consider one in particular it's pretty easy.

But the forum is already patched and we need to do things properly : make mods work together without blocking future upgrades of core phpbb and of mods and of our specific changes such as ldaps compatibility to connect to identity.mageia.org

Every thing taken appart can seem easy... and we could have done things quicker and dirtier... with the certainty of getting in trouble when next upgrade comes :-/

So yes we are going to add these mods (and perhaps some bbcode improvements) but not quicker than required by security and production requirements.

Sorry if all this seem slow.

Neither this user nor Ash or I : the server install and code modification is done by an automated administration system...

Ah, this explains a lot! Some times I kept wondering about this or that unfamiliar setting and compared it with the unpatched plain phpbb3 software, now I don't have to look anymore. This may also explain the bad display of Google search results compared to the nice results of the phpbb3 of mandrivauser.de. I could not find any reason why this should not work with forums.mageia.org, now it's useless to look any further.

Of course this also changes all I wrote here before because I can't say anything about a forum with unknown (to me) patches.

Hmm, reading this I get the impression that this way makes the forum very unflexible and static, no chance for quick changes for the sake of convenience.

Google display for mageia forums seems ok... and as far as SEO is concerned the results seem rather encouraging

Note you're using subsilver2 based skin in mandrivauser.de (very phpbb2 like in spirit) while we are using a prosilver based skin

I think this is much more likely to be the cause of your confusion because no patches with a visible effect were applied on the templates (Yet ;))

I only stated that it makes no sense to search without knowing what patches you applied. And, no, different style is not likely the cause. See for yourself:

Results of search for "DVB-T" in MandrivaUser.de:
Code: Select all
DVB-T Stick als scanner "erkannt" • MandrivaUser.de
.......
Digittrade DVB-T USB Stick • MandrivaUser.de
.......
DVB T-Tuner usb für Mandriva?[gelöst] • MandrivaUser.de
As you can see, the title of the thread comes first

Results of search for "Flash in forums.mageia.org:
Code: Select all
Mageia forum • View topic - Noob Questions : Flash
........
Mageia forum • View topic - Feedback re flash-player-plugin
...........
Mageia forum • View topic - Flash on 64 bits

See the difference? This has nothing to do with different styles.

I think the "$TOPIC_TITLE • Mageia forum" title layout would be better all over, for example easier to differentiate between topics based on the partially shown title in tabs, in tabbed browsers (e.g. any modern web browser). Also the "View Topic" bit is redundant, IMHO.

That was why I was looking for any difference in the software - of course not in the style directory. I did not find any difference yet which could cause this different display. So I assume it may be caused by any scripts or patches which change the plain vanilla behavior (as shown for MandrivaUser.de).

Of course, as is with assumptions.... :(

Any progress on this as it's becoming somewhat tedious and irritating to have to go back to the Board index to Mark forums read.

http://tracker.phpbb.com/browse/PHPBB3-8800

Not easy to set up because the U_MARK_FORUM dynamic link is contextual so when youre browsing a forum with subforums or the home page this link makes sense to phpbb3

But from search results you're not in a forum context but "outside"... phpbb guys are planning to solve this for phpbb3.0.10...

I'm still searching for a way to have this need satisfied by an other way before that...

Edit : see also : http://www.phpbb.com/bugs/phpbb3/52885

I don't understand, it's been working in mandrivauser.de since day 2 after we switched to phpbb3.
See screenshot for looks (link "Alle Foren als gelesen markieren" on the right side)
I added the link by placing this line in search_results.html:
Code: Select all
<td class="cat" colspan="7" align="{S_CONTENT_FLOW_END}"><!-- IF not S_IS_BOT and U_MARK_FORUMS --><a class="nav" href="{U_MARK_FORUMS}">{L_MARK_FORUMS_READ}</a><!-- ENDIF -->&nbsp;</td>

i've added this very link (without the If condition that prevents it from being displayed) and you can check by yourself that we have the behavior explained in phpbb bugtracker :)

(in fact after further analysis the U_MARK_FORUM dynamic url value is empty in search context... so either that would need a very ugly hack to set it up either it would need to switch to 3.0.10 release candidate)

Your link on a normal phpbb3 should not work at all :-/

Hmm, it is displayed at MandrivaUser.de and it has been working all the time.

I do not know enough PHP to hack anything in the function code, so all changes I made are in the templates (+ some smilies, BBCodes, etc.). Apart from this it is pure unchanged official phpbb3.
