[SOLVED] Wifi disconnecting/connecting continuously

Postby wobo » Jul 30th, '11, 11:24

Cauldron, Gnome, with latest updates as of yesterday morning:

Since this morning wifi connection is coming up, disconnecting after a few seconds, coming up again, disconnecting again. Problem: I can not find any reason! I did not change the system since yesterday (except for shutting down yesterday and rebooting today. May be there was an update yesterday which may have caused this behavior after reboot today. So, in short: I just lost my notebook as active Mageia system. :(

A typical Murphy: At home I could connect a cable for networking, but being not at home I'd have needed it today with a working wifi! I'd never thought I would write this, but right now I'm happy I left the Windows 7 system on the machine as a backup system.

Maybe try to delete
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless.d/*
and the key from /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
This is no real solution, but you could check if it happens again,
after setting the interface up with a fresh configuration.

That was my next step as soon as I had time to do it.
Now it's done, result: Connection failed.
The chip is recognized, available APs are listed (including the one which is working with the Windows system), the correct encryption method of the AP is listed, I'm using the same password as with the Windows system.

Ah, checked again:
1. I click on the list of APs, select the one I want to connect to.
2. "Configure" - shows the right mode, ESSID and password, but "Open Wep" instead of "WPA/WPA2 PreShared key" - I shange that and "OK".
3. I click on "Connect" : Connection failed!
4. I open the "Configure" window, the encryption mode is back to "Open Wep"!

Looking at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 I see that it shows "NM_CONTROLLED=yes" instead of "no" as configured in the GUI. I guess it is again the problem with network-manager which prevented wifi working earlier in Cauldron.

iwconfig shows:
wlan0 .....
Access Point: Not-Associated
Encryption key:off

Now with ifcfg-wlan0 in place I did 'ifup wlan0" and received an error message:
Code: Select all
Determining IP information for wlan0... failed; no link present. Check cable?

I see, somebody stole my wifi cable... :(

Well, don't know about network-manager, always hated it because after installation
it always broke my network connection and settings, but that was way back, like 2 years or so.
Seems the integration got better but the errors remained the same somehow.

Did you remove the existing entries from the end of /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf?
I think i remember somebody else having that problem with WPA/WPA2 always switch to Open WEP.,
believe it was at mandrivauser.de.

Yes, I did all you suggested.

It was me, 6 weeks ago, on Cauldron Gnome. :(
I'm at home now, wifi works without problem on the same machine with a Cauldron KDE installation!

Found the cause - same as 6 weeks ago: I de-installed network-manager, setup the wifi connection and everything works as before.

May be an option to put it in urpmi skip.list so that it doesn't break for you again, no?
