TP-Link nano USB wifi, not connecting (5.1/64)

Postby badsector » Aug 12th, '14, 06:14

model TL-WN725N does not work

D-Link dwa-131 & D-Link dwa-160a2 both do

I prefer the nano job because itś small enough not to break the connector when I knee it :-)
UFN and especially for a few months while I try to adapt/adopt Mageia, my skunkworks involve:

Which desktop environment are you using? Do you use net_applet or NetworkManager?
And please provide the output of the following commands:

Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep -i NET
ps -ef | grep -ie net -e wpa

and, as root:
Code: Select all
journalctl -b -u network --no-pager -a
systemctl status network.service -a
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Please provide complete output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
too and the output of the following commands as root:

Code: Select all
ifconfig -a
iwconfig
rfkill list all
netstat -rn

Also please mention what encryption you use. The SSID you want to connect to is LinuxRulez, correct?

WPA/WPA2 in all cases, the others work.

Looking at some notes I see that the required module may be 8188eu and that it may not be in the kernel yet and that I added it manually on the SuSE system.

Re: TP-Link nano USB wifi, not connecting (5.1/64)

Looks pretty interesting. You have a wireless interface, and it's associated to some AP, but you did neither get an IP adress for your interface, or a default route not even a network route. You probably can't even ping your router/AP, correct?

What bugs me is that from previous output you don't have an instance of wpa_supplicant running, which is required for encrypted connections.

So do you currently have an unencrypted or WEP connection? Please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -q wpa_supplicant
rpm -V wpa_supplicant
ps -ef | grep -i wpa

those earlier commands were issued with the inoperative transceiver plugged in and thus with no conectiion to the LAN

Code: Select all
# rpm -q wpa_supplicant
wpa_supplicant-2.2-1.mga5

Code: Select all
# rpm -V wpa_supplicant
S.?....T.  c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

Seems all good. You probably only need to configure it for DHCP or assign a static IP adress via http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/drakconnect.html

DP-Link TL-WN725N

there´s a large difference in the kernel module size and it´s not the same name

also, this may be irrelevant, when I pull it from the USB connector lsmod under suse no longer lists 8188eu but mag continues to show r8188eu

mageia 5.1 ..no go

If you look at your YaST output it also shows r8188eu. module size does not matter, as both distros have a completely different toolchain and compilation options.
What about the IP adress?

Yast shows it but the loaded module is 8188eu. The IP address is off DHCP the same as for the other one. Module size doesn´t matter but here I have two different ones and one of them works.

I´ll be downloading 5.2 overnight to see what improvements it offers.

For what it's worth there's no Mageia 5.1 or 5.2 unless you're running the Live DVD un-updated.
Once installed and updated or updated Live it's just Cauldron no matter what media you used to install it.

======================================================
1.1 Check which physical device and chipset your have,
and what is seen by the kernel

Code: Select all
# lspcidrake -v

1.2 Does your chipset require firmware to work? Is
the firmware installed on your box? and is it already
correctly loaded ?

1.3 Check which firmware is loaded (might output some more
information than just firmware). Enter with root rights:

Please badsector, next time use code tags as explained in ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandriva/m ... e_tags.ogv

This keeps the forum better readable, thanks ahead. ;)

So you compiled the driver yourself on your Suse installation. Then do the same on Mageia, and read your error messages, you're currently missing kernel-devel package (or maybe even full kernel-source package, depends on what the driver requires)

Installed kernel-source and a load of assorted kernel*-dev* packs, then repeated the compile attempt:

Code: Select all
cc1: some warnings being treated as errors
scripts/Makefile.build:318: recipe for target '/0/sa14/comp-hrdwr/TL-WN725N/rtl8188eu/rtl8188eu-master/os_dep/usb_intf.o' failed
make[2]: *** [/0/sa14/comp-hrdwr/TL-WN725N/rtl8188eu/rtl8188eu-master/os_dep/usb_intf.o] Error 1
Makefile:1303: recipe for target '_module_/0/sa14/comp-hrdwr/TL-WN725N/rtl8188eu/rtl8188eu-master' failed
make[1]: *** [_module_/0/sa14/comp-hrdwr/TL-WN725N/rtl8188eu/rtl8188eu-master] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/kernel-3.15.6-desktop-1.mga5'
Makefile:146: recipe for target 'modules' failed
make: *** [modules] Error 2

On spec that the intro message about wanings being treated as errors might apply to the entire return I pressed on to see what would blow up

Code: Select all
[root@darkstar-m4 rtl8188eu-master]# make install
install -p -D -m 644 8188eu.ko  /lib/modules/3.15.6-desktop-1.mga5/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
/sbin/depmod -a 3.15.6-desktop-1.mga5
mkdir -p /lib/firmware/rtlwifi
cp -n rtl8188eufw.bin /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/.

[root@darkstar-m4 rtl8188eu-master]# modprobe 8188eu
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert '8188eu': Exec format error
[root@darkstar-m4 rtl8188eu-master]# modprobe 8188eu.ko
modprobe: FATAL: Module 8188eu.ko not found.
[root@darkstar-m4 rtl8188eu-master]# insmod 8188eu.ko
insmod: ERROR: could not insert module 8188eu.ko: Invalid module format
