Re: Should the LXQT desktop be included in Mageia?

Postby paiiou » Feb 10th, '15, 17:56

Hello,

Libfm still contains requires of gtk.
I have of very bad experiments withf gtk3. And I would wish that LXQt does not depend any more of gtk.

I was able to compile qtbase5 without gtk. I saw that libfm can be also compiled without gtk.
See: https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/issues/485

Do you think of adopting this solution?

What bad experiments? What actual benefits do you have not requiring gtk?
And the other question, you are aware what you would lose when you would remove all gtk packages from your system? No MCC anymore, no libreoffice, vlc, firefox, gimp and some others ...

I can take a look at splitting libfm into a separate -gtk and -qt subpackage which do not depend on each other, but maybe this won't make it into mga5, as it's already quite late in the release cycle.

They were especially inconveniences, not very grave, but becoming painful in the long run:
Position of windows with the installer, the absence of the scrolling of the installed packages (always with the installer),
bad behavior of the applications gtk2 with Xfce, behavior of ascenceurs, non compliance with the size of windows...
I think that it was especially due to the lack of compatibility between gtk2 and gtk3.
That's why I wish to leave Xfce for LXQT and more to have of gtk.

MCC can be largely replaced by AdminPanel.
It has been for a long time since I use more firefox, VLC, gimp...
With Xfce I used Parole, Midori, Claws-mail...
With Qt there are also little resource intensive applications.

It would be good

Please excuse bad English, it is an internet translation. I hope that it is understandable.

Seems you're mixing things up pretty much. The installer has already been fixed for the most parts.
Also, what does the installer have to do with the installed system?

In LXQT this is depending on the window manager, and when you run only QT applications, then you don't have to worry about GTK.

Apart from that, this does have nothing to do with libfm. If you use pcmanfm-qt, it will use libfm-qt, no GTK involved.

For adminpanel, that's still in a testing phase and not considered stable. But feel free to use it.

This is exact. But I saw that frequently, when gtk3 is modified, a new inconvenience appears. And I make enough test to be able to assert it

doktor5000 wrote:Also, what does the installer have to do with the installed system?

Simply that both depend of gtk3.

doktor5000 wrote:In LXQT this is depending on the window manager, and when you run only QT applications, then you don't have to worry about GTK.

Probably. But at our home(with us) we say "once bitten, twice shy"

doktor5000 wrote:IApart from that, this does have nothing to do with libfm. If you use pcmanfm-qt, it will use libfm-qt, no GTK involved.

pcmanfm-qt requires libfm.so.4, which requires libmenu-cache.so.3 which requires libfm-extra.so.4 = libfm4
lxqt-runner requires libmenu-cache.so.3 ...
I think of not having made a mistake. In any case, if I try to install pcmanfm-qt or to lxqt-runner, a whole dependence gtk is asked, even by using urpmi --no-recommends

At my home, it works on my machine of test. I do not still use it on my working machine.

For the moment, thank you for your answer and good evening (finally what stays there)

Postby wintpe » Feb 23rd, '15, 00:02

Thats not the limit of the problem either.
switching to kde, and start up of kde is dead slow. at least 30 seconds to get task bar, then launching firefox takes abourt a min.
firefox realy unresponcive for long periods of time.

my money is on those last ones done at 21:39/21:42

as thats the time the task bar in lxqt turned from light grey to dark grey, prompting me to log out and reboot, just to ensure
everything was sane.

now lxqt wont start at all, just goes back to standard kde login manager

this is going to be laborious to wind back.

oh and yes i have tried deleting .config and .kde4 to reset any prior config

regards peter

OK this is going to digress because as im sniffing around trying to find why firefox is now acting like a pig
ive also stummbled across this, that i think started happening in last mondays kernel update.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44281

sure enough after reading that i unplug my logitec uvc webcam and it stops

Re: tonights updates to mageia 5 beta have stopped LXQT work

Postby wintpe » Feb 23rd, '15, 00:43

ok uninstalled lxqt and reinstalled the rpm's
lxqt now works, but firefox ius still like a horse stuck in 6 foot deep mud
takes a full 1.5 mins before i can even select a menu

then when i try to shut it down it takes nearly two mins to exit.

however palemoon, from an external source works fine.

so its a local library update that has stuffed it as firefox has niot been updated since Sat 07 Feb 2015 23:22:34 GMT
and has had no issues till today.

OK well panic over, the webcam issues still a bug, from last kernel update

but reinstalling every thing lxqt related seemed to fix the problem.

but the update itself either corrupted or, overlayed something in the wrong order, i cant explain it.

and caused what looked like an incompatible library or memory leak, or something

as the tasked i focused on were having issues.

Well, that's the joy of using Cauldron ;)

Might have been a mirror sync problem. I've had to switch mirrors a couple of times this weekend whilst testing beta3, as updates have been slowly rolling out.

yes i suppose so.

i fully accept that things like the kernel issue will happen, as its hard to test every device.

and i decided to run with mga5 beta as my main desktop, as i felt that not enough people feedback issues
before launch and we end up with releases like mga4.0, and whose to blame, well we are.....
its certainly not those who put in hours of work for free to get the product out of the door
without adequate and widespread feedback/testing they don't have a chance, so even if some of my
posts sound like a moan, at times, because its also effecting my day to day experience and
is at times frustrating, I also fully appreciate how hard it is for those maintaining the packages.

Currently working on it, maybe I can make it before release freeze is in place.

All of LXQt 0.9 should now be in cauldron. Some user-visible changes, from abovementioned release announcement:

  • Some old themes have been dropped [A-Mego, Flat and Green] and for now there is no mga-light theme, I'll look into recreating that.
=> If you had one of the old themes in use, you need to re-select another theme, there is no automatic fallback
  • Some new themes have been added, and the existing themes have been cleaned up and polished
  • menu structure might be a little different, on my personal workstation the {Logout,Hibernate,Reboot,Shutdown,Lock} menu functions are in a "Miscellaneous" (Sonstiges in german) submenu
=> Those should be located in a dedicated "Leave" submenu at the bottom, as shown here: https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/issues/462 ... t-72342134
  • panel background is now configurable, and transparency is also configurable thanks to our contributor dglent
  • font autohinting and font compatibility with KDE has also been added/improved by our contributor dglent
    => https://github.com/lxde/lxqt-config/pull/13

So thanks Dimitrios (also for the new and improved meteo-qt versions), and happy testing for everybody!

Re: mageia 5 b3 LXQT not working

Postby wintpe » Feb 24th, '15, 00:17

OK ive un-solved this thread, because although i did manage to get lxqt and firefox working last night, it was late
and i did not realy get lxqt working as it should more i worked around a broken lxqt
so ive just craeted a new user admin on my system, and logged in with lxqt to see if it was any of my home directory settings that
were interfering

its not
brand new user, and brand new install on lxqt minimal and lxqt on login is unusable.

sure if you poke around in the extreamly dark screen and select a theme you can make it presentable,
but now out of the box its a mess.

task bar all you can see is start icon, plus the 1 2 3 4, the rest of the task bar is black

menu has no login or logout on it so the only way to logout is control-alt-backspace
seems to be missing the bottom part of the menu.

theres no logout or screen lock at the end of the task bar

cirtainly not the well presented login lxqt usualy gives you by default

using kde for now

ps todays kernel update seems to have cured last weeks webcam issue with logitec UVC

Yes, noticed also after an upgrade with a fresh configuration.
But please keep that in the LXQt thread: viewtopic.php?p=54786#p54786

Logout and login are now in "Other" submenu, but they should be a in a separate "Leave" submenu.

Totally forgot one thing: I had to correct lxmenu-data package, it was imported with the wrong version number into cauldron.
All cauldron users need to manually remove it, and then reinstall it. This is irrelevant for mga4 => mga5 upgrades.

Wrong version: 0.7 or 0.8
Correct version: 0.1.4

Code: Select all
rpm -e --nodeps lxmenu-data; urpmi lxmenu-data

Currently working on some QT bugs that result in only every second mouseclick being accepted ...
Panel items don't always respond on first click #503 and also https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/issues/436 ... t-72373045
upstream Qt bug: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-44231

Already added it locally in a rebuilt qtbase5 package:
Code: Select all
# (doktor5000) fix mouse click delay in xcb plugin for 5.4
# fixes QTBUG-32609 QTBUG-35065 QTBUG-43776QTBUG-44166 QTBUG-44231
# taken from https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qtbase/commit/76de1ac0a4cd384f608a14b5d77a8cf3ef1ec868

Seems to fix the issue with the panel, but causes bad regressions in vlc, as the redraw rate for some mouseover effects is much too high ...

Thanks Doktor

nice to have some conformation its not just me seeing this.

and yes i had missed the lxmenu rpm as i was only looking for lxqt*

should lxmenu not be included in task-*-lxqt so that a remove and reinstall would have also updated that.

It is in task-lxqt-minimal:

urpmq --requires task-lxqt-minimal
--requires behaviour changed, use --requires-recursive to get the old behaviour
dbus-x11
desktop-common-data
lxmenu-data
lxqt-about
lxqt-common
lxqt-config
lxqt-globalkeys
lxqt-notificationd
lxqt-panel
lxqt-policykit
lxqt-powermanagement
lxqt-qtplugin
lxqt-runner
lxqt-session
openbox
pcmanfm-qt
qterminal
task-x11

The problem is, the version number dropped from 0.8 to the correct one, 0.1.4.
The only way to fix this would be to use an Epoch, but Epoch is ugly and should not be used at all costs, if it can be avoided.

Re: mageia 5 b3 LXQT not working

With regard to the incomplete menu part of this conversation: when I installed LXqt the menu file it was using was /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu and this did not provide the facility to logout/shutdown etc. Digging around I found /usr/menus/lxqt-applications.menu which provides a complete set of menus & submenus including the ability to shutdown etc.

Shutdown/restart etc appears to be provided by lxqt-leave but if I run it without options to obtain a shutdown menu (like lxde-logout provided) I get the following:

iconTheme "oxygen"
Theme: Cannot open file for reading: "/usr/share/lxqt/themes/Ambiance/lxqt-leave.qss"
LxQt::Translator: Qt translations not found

So may be there is something missing here?

Yes, already known, have to ask upstream why the default is not set to /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu and now that you mention it, /usr/menus/lxqt-applications.menu seems to be installed in the wrong directory, it probably also belongs in /etc/xdg/menus/ so that the updated menu structure for the dedicated "Leave" submenu is used. Just tried locally, and now it looks good:

Nope, the error message only means that for this application there is no dedicated file in the LXQt theme available.

If you run it with a real action like lxqt-leave --lockscreen it will just work, but display the same message.

I hope you're talking about /etc/menus/lxqt-applications.menu from lxqt-common, that's what i got , /usr/menus/lxqt-applications.menu isn't available on my system

Code: Select all
[22:38](0)[root@thinkpad:~]# urpmf /usr/menus/lxqt-applications.menu
[22:38](0)[root@thinkpad:~]# urpmf lxqt-applications.menu
lxqt-common:/etc/menus/lxqt-applications.menu
lxqt-common:/etc/menus/lxqt-applications.menu

choosing /etc/menus/lxqt-applications.menu seems to work ok.

Yep, sorry /usr was a typo. /etc/menus/lxqt-applications.menu belongs into standard XDG menu path /etc/xdg/menus, and it seems it basically duplicates the functionality of lxde-applications.menu from lxmenu-data.

Re: mageia 5 b3 LXQT not working

Think I've fixed it now. Panel should now use /etc/xdg/menus/lxqt-applications.menu for the menu structure, this should also add the dedicated "Leave" submenu.
Also added a custom panel config, as the default one seems incomplete. Added a custom theme, based on the new Kde-plasma theme.

And finally added some checks to /usr/bin/startlxqt to ensure the default pcmanfm-qt and lxqt config files are existent for new users,
and copy them over from /etc - the same as viewtopic.php?p=50729#p50729 basically.

To ease testing this, I've added a new shell alias to remove LXQt & pcmanfm-qt configuration files for the current user:
Code: Select all
alias lxqt_cleanup='rm -rf ~/.config/lxqt ; rm -rf ~/.config/pcmanfm-qt ; rm -f ~/.cache/menus/*; rm -rf ~/.cache/pcmanfm-qt ;'

Fixes should arrive with lxqt-common-0.9.1-3mga5 and lxqt-panel-0.9.0-4mga5.

I'll also merge this thread with the other LXQt thread as there's not much point in cluttering the LXQt issues among several similar threads.
