As many of you will note or remember, I load each new release on an old T-23 Think Pad to see if it works. The RC 4 install went slow but worked perfectly and for the first time since Mageia 1 the CPU will slow down when idle instead of running full blast all the time. I consider that a very nice thing since it will save power when I use the laptop on the battery instead of plugged into the wall.

Memory usage seems about as usual with KDE as always.

I was one of the folks, a minority perhaps, who never really liked the look of the Mageia 3 default desktop. I must say the the default desktop this time looks great and reminds me of cherry blossoms in spring on the Mall in DC or in Tokyo. Great stuff!

So far updates and functions seem to be working well. I am very appreciative of all the work to make the new release! Thanks all!

We'll be releasing Mageia 4 in the next few days but there is always plenty to do. We test all updates for stable releases too before they are pushed out and plan to release updated Mageia 3 isos when the dust settles a bit which will have to be tested aswell.

I used urpmi auto-update and the software no longer says Cauldron but Official for the install in My Computer with sysinfo and Konqueror. Is it still RC or is it released? (Why is sysinfo deprecated now? It is useful info for a desktop user, I think.)

I was reading in another M4 RC post that someone really hated the new theme look. They thought the flowers looked gay... I am not gay and I think the 'cherry blossoms in Spring' look is very nice, actually. The lighter backgound colot is a nice change from 3.

I didn't like Mageia 3 look so much because I thought it was just dark enough in color to be a bit depressing to look at. I also don't like the default opensuse 12.3/13.1 desktop which has a black background for the same reason. Having said that, it is not a problem for anyone to change the look of the desktop with a RIGHT CLICK of the mouse and a few changes in choice of other available for download desktops. I did that with Mageia 3 and also with opensuse 13.1 which I run on another Think Pad X-31 laptop.

I digressed.

As to memory management for the T-23 I wonder what services I absolutely need to have boot each time for default. I am trying to free up some RAM in the laptop and wonder what services at boot I can kill? I don't use apper so polkit can go, correct? Is avahi only for search or what other use does it have for a normal desktop user with no active server of any sort running on a laptop? I remember dbus being broken all of the time in the past and wonder if I can kill it as well? It isn't dead now but what is it doing?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, quite some misperceptions there - go ahead and disable dbus and polkit and see what happens ...
