KDE fail to start default kwrite = bug 11946

Postby morgano » Dec 17th, '13, 23:06

On a feesh install mga4 b2 with new /home i do not have the problem.
But on the machine where i did a fresh install of the system, but reused /home, i have the weird problem that double clicking i.e a *.txt text file on the desktop, nothing happens except i get a icon in system tray that say kwrite is loading. It never do. Or in Dolphin if I i.e double-click .xsession-errors , dolphin hangs...

If i select to open with leafpad or gedit it works.

I can start kwrite from a terminal, but it takes much longer to start than gedit.
I can also start kate, but it takes a minute to launch...

I guess one configuration in KDE somewhere is not OK. Where...?

No panic, i have set the system to open text files using gedit, but it is not "the right way" to do it.

Remove everything related to kate, kwrite and katepart from ~/.kde4/share/config and ~/.kde4/share/apps and check the MIME associations?
Does the issue also happen with a freshly created user on the box with a reused /home?

Thanks, i did as you proposed, plus uninstalled and reinstalled kate and kwrite (which oulled task-kde-minimal), and reinstalled them all.
It got better: now i can launch kate and kwrite normally from terminal.
But i can not start neither from the launch menu, and not by selecting a .txt in dolphin and select kate or kwrite.

Update: also renamed .kde4 (while not logged in as that user) : no change.
Any other idea where the misconfiguration may be hidden?

Seems either klauncher or dbus are broken on your installation or they're not running properly.

Also you didn't answer my question:

If i copy the link for kwrite from launch menu to desktop, it also do not start.
BUT if i in that links setting checkmark to open text terminal and leave it open, then kwrite starts
More exactly: a konsole shows up, then kwrite, and then a dialog saying KDEinit could not start konsole. Uhh?
No messages shows in konsole.

And yes all above is the same in another reused home, as well as in a fresh home.
The homes are from mga2, so maybe too big step, but so far everyting else user specific seem OK.

I have similar problems printing to my network printer in KDE: Okular and Libreoffice fail, while Firefox, Opera, Leafpad can print.
That also goes for newly created users.
But it works for all users in gnome which I now installed.
And at the same time all is OK on a similar machine, almost identical setup.

Probably some unusual thing gone wrong in KDE installation
I let this rest.

FWIW, your konsole/kwrite issue seems to be https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11946
Was that on the box in your signature or by chance on a machine with nvidia graphics?
