Why the *** do I always have to load the numlock package separately after a default installation (I took the KDE option). I would suppose this is fairly standard now, even laptops have a separate numerical block nowadays.

Why don't you use the settings in KDE systemsettings to change numlock behaviour?

I could do that as well, but don't you think that on a modern machine, numeric pad locked should be default??????

What does that have to do with modern machine or not? Some people may want their systems to honor the BIOS defaults and not enforce any arbitrary settings.
If you want it enabled, enable it there. Or install the numlock package if you think that's better.

That is true for the public you attract with beta-releases. But next year -end of WinXP support - I will be installing Mageia for a number of very very average people, and those don't want to know about BIOS and whatever. And KDE settings is out of reach or interest for those people. And having to fiddle to make a number block work leaves a somswhat doubtfull impression, normal things shoud work by default after installation.
But I think the way this discussion goes is leading us nowhere , I am afraid, so I close the thread.

It always amazes me how people think that the way THEY use the machine should be the way the default is set.
For myself, I always leave numlock off because I don't usually use the numeric keypad for the numbers, because I am left-handed and it is very unnatural for me.
The default is what it is. You can always change it to suit yourself.
