Whishes about VirtualBox

Postby janpihlgren » Apr 29th, '13, 09:14

After tried a couple of time to install and run VirtualBox in Mageia 3 RC I whish that there will be a package called task Virtualbox that include
all you need to install Virtual Box.
For now you have to add more packages to the virtualbox package.
For now yoy will be a little frustrated when to find out which packages also to install.

Which packages do you need to install in addition?
Installing virtualbox pulls all packages, if you want dkms integration, you can install that, but it's not mandatory.

I get the following problem:
1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
2.
Code: Select all
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

So I had to instal the dkms package.

Hi janpihlgren,

Are you happy with Virtual Box?
Is it a good replacement for the non-working VMware Workstation 9.0.2 ?

Normaly I use VMware Workstation and have had just a few problem.
I'm also using VirtualBox, as a free program, and haven't had any problem until I tried to install it and guest OS in Mageia 3 RC.
As i wrote, in my case, I run in the problem that , as I feel, when I have installed VirtualBox I was told to also instal the mkms-package.
Well in other aspects I'm satisfied with VirtualBox.

My experience is that a re-boot is required after installing virtualbox, in order to ensure that the kernel module is properly loaded; and that one needs to add one's user to the vboxusers group, in order to use the USB extensions. Otherwise, I have had no problems with virtualbox in Mageia 3.
