Any reason you want to use VMware in particular? VMware produces some great products like ESXi, but if you just want a virtual machine environment for Mageia I would use Virtualbox.

Im just used to VMware from my work - i have used it for long time. I know about VBox and using it on mageia atm but still vmware should work too.

Any suggestion how to fix the PANIC error? I had searched already but didnt find anything helpful.

Error is: Unicode_AllocWithLength: Couldn't convert invalid buffer from ASCII to Unicode.

Have that something to do with locales?

The log above reports:

2013-04-01T23:50:17.680+01:00| vmui| I120: HAL05LoadHALLibraries: Could not dlopen libhal.so.1.
2013-04-01T23:50:17.681+01:00| vmui| I120: HAL04LoadHALLibraries: Could not dlopen libhal.so.0.

http://alt.os.linux.mageia.narkive.com/ ... are-player
states "As the haldaemon has been deprecated, vmware player will not work till they
produce a new version that works with udisks2, unless you can figure out
how to get haldaemon working in Mageia 3.
Regards, Dave Hodgins"

Now I still have Mageia 2 x86_64 running, where VMware Workstation 9.0.2 runs just fine.
And guess what: libhal is NOT present in my Mageia 2.

It must be something else...

I tried "strace -ttT vmware" in my Mageia 3 beta 4 x86_64 KDE live DVD install.
But the output is too large for the terminal.
It reports lots of no such file or directory for .png files and the libhal.so.0 and libhal.so.1

About VirtualBox and Mageia 3 I have run in big troubble.
My host i 86_64 with VirtualBox 4.1.24 and the host OS is Mageia 2 with the latest updates.
I install Magea 3 Beta 4 from iso (i586). Then I reboot whith success. Contiued with update, 485 package. Reboot failed.
I did this twice. The result was the same each time.
I have reported this in Bugzilla 9807.
My opinion is that this might have to do with an old version of VirtualBox. Latest VirtualBox is 4.2.12. Or it maybe have to do with systemd.

I also run VMware Workstation 9.0.2 and haven't had that kind of problem but during testing Mageia 3 I run i problem to install VMware Tools.
VMware Workstation also have trubble to start correctly. I have to start vmware process manually each time I start my computer and vmware. also somthing that appear
after a update of Mageia 2. At the begining i works i Mageia 2.

I use this two virtual package for testing different OS and even show windowsuser how the can test Linux without wipe out windows.
My conclusion is that there has been some error with systemd.

Hi janpihlgren,

Did you install VMware Workstation 9.0.2 in Mageia 3? (This is what I do.)
Or did you install Mageia 3 as guest OS in VMware Workstation running on another OS?

I also encounter:
Code: Select all
[bert@Dell7720Mageia3 ~]$ vmware
Logging to /tmp/vmware-bert/vmware-modconfig-28888.log
filename:       /lib/modules/3.8.8-2.mga3custom/misc/vmmon.ko
supported:      external
license:        GPL v2
description:    VMware Virtual Machine Monitor.
author:         VMware, Inc.
srcversion:     720B99362854B538D7E9A9A
depends:
vermagic:       3.8.8-2.mga3custom SMP mod_unload
PANIC /build/mts/release/bora-1031769/bora/lib/unicode/unicodeCommon.c:330
Aborted

You don't get this?
What do you mean by "I have to start vmware process manually each time I start my computer and vmware."
What do you want to say with the reference to Mageia 2?
(I run VMware Workstation 9.0.2 in Mageia 2 x86_64 without issues.)

Apparantly we also need:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33835
An unknown symbol in vmblock kernel module prevents copy/paste and host mounting from working.

I have installed VMware in Mageia 2. I have installed Mageia 3 as quest.

I have to start the process by mageia control center. (Mageia 2)
What do you want to say with the reference to Mageia 2?

I will say that there, as my opinion, have been some error introduced with an update of systemd and that error still excist in Mageia 3

I use VMware Workstation 9.0.2 in Mageia 2 x86_64 without issues.
As guest OS I have Windows 7.
And my Mageia 2 is up to date with all repositories.

We have all experienced 'PANIC' when trying to compile VMware's kernel modules in Mageia 3 betas up to and including today 's update using kernel 3.8.8-desktop-2.mga3. It seems the absence of libraries libhal.so.0 and libhal.so.1 are to blame. I am curious as to where to find the source for these libraries. Maybe we could complie them ourselves!

As to those whose contribution is 'Why don't you use VirtualBox?', the answer is that it cannot do everything that VMware does.

NO that is not the issue.

On my Mageia 2 x86_64 I get exactly the same warnings about libhal.so when running
Code: Select all
strace -ttT -f -o log.txt vmware

Also in Mageia 2 libhal.so is not present.
But in Mageia 2 VMware Workstation 9.0.2 is running fine.

I also have VMware running fine under Mageia 2 but not Mageia 3 (so far).
As for HAL. I am merely quoting what testers have reported.

I thought I found somthing important..
/var/log/vmware-installer contained:
[2013-05-01 19:14:29,548] This system has KVM enabled. You cannot run VMs with KVM enabled.
That is new for Mageia 3: Mageia 2 does not load KVM modules...

So I did
su
lsmod | grep kvm
rmmod kvm_intel
rmmod kvm

vmware-installer -u vmware-workstation

And install again, but still the same

Code: Select all
[bert@Dell7720Mageia3 log]$ vmware
Logging to /tmp/vmware-bert/vmware-modconfig-8377.log
filename:       /lib/modules/3.8.10-1.mga3custom/misc/vmmon.ko

srcversion:     720B99362854B538D7E9A9A

vermagic:       3.8.10-1.mga3custom SMP mod_unload
PANIC /build/mts/release/bora-1031769/bora/lib/unicode/unicodeCommon.c:330
Aborted

How to debug this further?
strace gives 20 MB comparing Mageia 2 and 3 strace is not easy ...

Very true, but unless those additional features are required, Vbox is a great solution. (Although I must admit that I do prefer and use the vmdk format for disks even in Virtualbox.)

janpihlgren wrote:[...]My problem have to do with running Magaia 3 Beta 4 and VMware Workstation with VMware Tools[...]

As I recall implementing VMware Tools on virtual instances of certain Linux Distros was often problematic. One issue I ran into more than once was that VMware sometimes looks for the kernel header files in the wrong place while compiling VMWT. Problem was resolved by creating a symbolic link. Looks like your issue is different though.

vmware workstation 9.0.2 mageia 2 versus 3

Postby bertaerts » May 6th, '13, 21:37

A logfile in /tmp/vmware-<user>/ contains in Mageia 2 x86_64

Code: Select all
2013-05-02T21:47:25.931+01:00| vmui| I120: UUID: Unable to open /dev/mem: Permission denied
2013-05-02T21:47:25.931+01:00| vmui| I120: UUID: Invalid gethostid routine. Value = 7F0100.
2013-05-02T21:47:25.931+01:00| vmui| I120: vmxFilePath="/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx"

While in Mageia 3 x86_64 there is an error and PANIC:

Code: Select all
2013-05-02T20:47:42.773+01:00| vmui| I120: UUID: Unable to open /dev/mem: Permission denied
2013-05-02T20:47:42.774+01:00| vmui| I120: UUID: Invalid gethostid routine. Value = 7F0100.
2013-05-02T20:47:42.774+01:00| vmui| I120: Unicode_AllocWithLength: Couldn't convert invalid buffer [Dell7720] from ASCII to Unicode.
2013-05-02T20:47:42.774+01:00| vmui| I120: PANIC /build/mts/release/bora-1031769/bora/lib/unicode/unicodeCommon.c:330

Why does conversion from ASCII to Unicode fail on Mageia 3 while not on Mageia 2?
Am I missing a library?
Is there a library too new for this conversion?

I have the same problem after installing VMware Player 5.0 in Mageia 3 x64 -final release-. I won't install Mageia 3 in may main computer because I do need VMWare Player everyday for professional use, and VirtualBox is not an option for me. VMWare Player 5.0 works fine in Mageia 2, si I hope a solution will be found soon for Mageia 3...

In order to start VMware Player 5.0.2 in Mageia 3 x64 -final release- i have tried different approaches but the following steps did the trick:

1. first download and install the hal and dependencies from mageia2 (I don't know if vmplayer will start without hal packages, but somebody said that will not)
Code: Select all
rpm -ivh --nodeps  hal-0.5.14-6.mga1.x86_64.rpm lib64hal1-0.5.14-6.mga1.x86_64.rpm policykit-0.9-8.mga1.x86_64.rpm lib64polkit2-0.9-8.mga1.x86_64.rpm consolekit-0.4.5-4.mga2.x86_64.rpm hal-info-0.0-5.20091130.3.mga1.noarch.rpm

2. restart computer or start haldaemon (service haldaemon start)
3. install vmplayer 5.0.2 if not already instaled
4. to start vmplayer in console I typed:
Code: Select all
export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS='yes'; /usr/bin/vmplayer

I still got some errors from haldaemon ( failed to execute '/usr/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory)
but my Windows8 virtual machine started without a problem.

The error "PANIC /build/mts/release/bora-1031769/bora/lib/unicode/unicodeCommon.c:330" was generated by one of the new libraries the vmplayer tried to load.
I guees it is posible to specify to vmplayer which libraries to use (shipped or system) using this variables in order to find out which library generated the problem:
Code: Select all
2013-05-22T15:33:41.668+02:00| appLoader| I120: VMWARE_SHIPPED_LIBS_LIST is not set.
2013-05-22T15:33:41.668+02:00| appLoader| I120: VMWARE_SYSTEM_LIBS_LIST is not set.
2013-05-22T15:33:41.668+02:00| appLoader| I120: VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS is set with value "yes".
2013-05-22T15:33:41.668+02:00| appLoader| I120: VMWARE_USE_SYSTEM_LIBS is not set.

This is the messages that vmplayer generates on launch now:
Code: Select all
