Mageia 3 Beta 3: Dolphin/KDE locks up when resizing window.

Installed Beta 3 from 64-bit full 4GB DVD. KDE desktop.

Sometimes, but not always, when I attempt to resize a window in a hurry, the mouse pointer changes to a double-arrow (<=>) and the desktop freezes and the mouse becomes unresponsive ... sticking to the window edge still showing the double-arrow.

Once it gets to that stage, one of following brings it out of the freeze:
- A removable media insertion
- Physically connecting/disconnecting RJ45 to Ethernet
- Pressing the power switch of the PC
- Waiting for about a minute or two pondering it I should reset the system.

Noticed this problem in 64-bit Beta 2 as well. After a few repetitions I noticed if I wait a just a little bit longer before dragging to resize, I can avoid the problem. When I position the mouse pointer over the window edge, it takes a little while for pointer to change from a standard arrow to a double-arrow. And then if I drag, no problem. If I don't give the time for the double-arrow to show up, it almost always freezes.

On a lightly loaded system this problem does not show. It is when I have 50% load like multiple DVD reads or heavy I/O, I see this problem.

Thanks.

You should try running spaceFM instead. Less bloat + better functionality. I have run Cauldron w/KDE for quite some time and I ripped out dolphin awhile back since I favor SpaceFM. I have not missed it at all, but TBH I generally prefer the CLI for most things. Also as I understand it, one of the lead Dolphin devs quit the project a few months ago.

You may want to file a bug report for this issue as well.

This very issue is a poster boy for my love/hate relationship with KDE. I keep going back to it because it is so robust and I am naturally lazy, but there are times where I tear my hair out. Random Dolphin/Konqueror lockups are one of those stressful issues with KDE.

FWIW, I've never had a lock-up in dolphin. Well, except for the time when the "Information" sidepanel wasn't that finished,
it would lock dolphin completely for several seconds, on some not-so-common filetypes. Try if disabling the sidepanel helps.

I've heard people say simialar things before and I just don't see how this would steer one away from KDE. KDE has been my DE (when I use one) of choice for years; however, even when I started using it (pre-dolphin) I ditched Konkquor. I mean allot of default apps are bloated, slow, etc. no matter what DE you choose to run. KDE doesn't force you to use most apps or even keep them installed.

It's funny how people don't think twice about changing media players and other default apps but for whatever reason keep Dolphin even if they don't like it. I mentioned SpaceFM earlier, but there is a plethora of other compatable file managers that integrate quite well with KDE. You should try some out and find one you like. IMHO SpaceFM and Midnight Commander are the two best options, both of which are available in MGA media.
