i realize mageia has missed their launch date for beta 3.

why doesnt someone keep us informed when that happens instead of silence.

What about a little bit of patience and politeness?

I would also like to know. I am going to install a new OS on a Raid box tonight or tomorrow at the latest. I am going to gamble on a Mageia Beta because it seems stable enough and I'll have access to the box in May when I'll be able to update it to the final release, and hopefully no one will be the wiser. I hope all the raid and grub2 stuff has stabilized and the delay is only due to work being done on the upgrading logic. Should I wait till tomorrow or give up and install M3B2 now?

If you can install M3B2 and update it you have M3B3 or perhaps newer.
The only reason to use the latest Beta is to test the installer.

Yes, my plan is exactly that: install the latest M3B, then in May switch to the final release repos, update, reboot and leave the system alone (forever). If I can't do this remotely through ssh I'm dead. Or at least comatose.
Only concern is the very few things that are not cleanly updated automatically. One possible problem is Raid partition format -- once you create it you cannot automatically (i.e. remotely through ssh) update it through urpmi, should it change to a new version in the meantime. Some things can only be fixed by sitting next to the physical box with various install media at hand. Another one is if the grub2 formats change between now and final release. Also systemd worries me to no end -- powerful but too dynamic, which tends to botch upgrades. There may be other. And the goal is to end up with a system indistinguishable from final release (to avoid eventual blame). Real life is very complicated. That's why I prefer installing the very latest M3B possible.

Although true, then why have all the milestone releases? And I agree, if its not ready, sure, delay it! But communicating that it is being delayed is not too much to ask?

I am sure it is and I am glad it is taking as long as it needs, unlike some other distributions. However no one is contesting the developers' speed.

I ended up downloading M3B2 instead, after waiting as long as I could. Had I known this three days ago I would not have waited and I would be better off now. It's called planning, a valuable feature we should not lightly dismiss.

Now, everyone has done it's story and given it's opinions towards
release-planning, it is time to jump into.

First: i very much agree with Ken Bergen where he is saying, that an up-to-date
Mageia 3 Beta 2 is actually Mageia 3 Beta 3 so far. Yeah, okay without the
installer-part, that is.

Second: sure, it would be great everything would work out, the way it was
planned before, but as plannings go, they are very much depending on aspects
most of the time not foreseen.

Third: yammering is no skill, helping our distribution grow to what we expect
from it, is.
For me, i feel much better using my spare energy to contribute in
whatever way i prefer, there are choices enough. Just have a look at our
"Contribute"-page.

Fourth: we are talking about pre-releases, no big deal, right?

Fifth: this whole discussion seems to return every time again, and is at least
very boring, for those seriously working, for the best to reach. All those,
building hard, should earn respect and support instead of this kind of
time-wasting, and meaningless rubbish.

Sixth: just my personal advise: don't let yourself being imposed by those
futile things in life. God made time and he made plenty of it, and probably not
without a reason.

Well dear Mageians, this is my view upon this whole non-issue.
And whilst it is, what it is, i close this topic, no correspondence and back to
the job.
