Hi there

The release is finally done. Isos of beta2 are available on public mirrors: http://blog.mageia.org/en/2013/01/25/ti ... -2-is-out/

Thanks for all the hard work. We are now in the last run. We need tests more than ever.

Enjoy!

I'm not at the expert level, but I'll pass along what I see.
The computer here is an unmodified refurbished HP Pavilion P7-1234. I suspect that this computer's hardware is not well supported, as several distributions of Linux have failed to install on it. Mageia showed the most promise, and about a week ago everything was apparently working quite well, except that totem still wouldn't launch. That's a trivial thing.

I'm using 64-bit Mageia 3.8.0rc4-1 with Gnome. and am using free, nonfree, and tainted update sources
The update a few days ago caused Mageia to uninstall Gnome and revert my computer to IceWM. I probably shouldn't have, but I reinstalled Gnome.

The update to 3.8.0rc5-1 as of 27th January resulted in the error message:
"Detected a loaded display driver kernel module which conflicts with the driver the X server is configured to use. Startup of the X server may now fail."
And it did.

I booted to the previous Mageia kernel, rc4-1, to post this, as the current kernel, 5-1, throws that error message and then goes to a featureless black screen and becomes unresponsive to anything short of the power on-off button.

Given the high rate of updates the Mageia team has been producing, I have confidence that this is only a brief "glitch" in development, but I felt that you might want to know of any possible problems. If you have any advice or questions, I'll try to help.
I edited this post Tuesday, Jan 29, to correct some information and add a few details.

I've been running Mga3 since the first Alpha using Gnome 3 and haven't ran across it uninstalling Gnome. I'm glad it didn't. I'm running a HP DC-7700 C2D system.

So far so good on updating it. I try to update it once or twice a day. If you let it go too long without updating, issues may occur.

Just a thought!

Tracker problem. Re: Time for tests! Mageia 3 beta 2 is out

I think there is a problem with the the terasaur tracker.
I used it for downloading, and am now seeding but last two-three days Ktorrent timeout connecting to http://tracker.terasaur.org/announce
I added linuxtracker.org tracker and it is OK, as always.
terasaur aslo say it have only one seed, also an indication of problem, while linuxtracker report 30+ (but why do my Ktorrent say only 3 ?).
If more than I have problems i suggest we link to linuxtracker instead on the download page and use that officially.

Just a brief addendum to my previous post:
Previously, as noted, my X server would fail to startup.
Using MCC in text console mode, I changed my video card driver to "Xorg|ATI", which corrected the above-mentioned problem and allowed booting with GUI.
The previous driver was "Radeon HD 6400 and later (radeon/fglrx)"
When I launch MCC from the Gnome GUI, it still shows the "Radeon HD 6400 and later (radeon/fglrx)" as the highlighted driver, but under the heading of "Custom."
That's as far as I have the knowledge to explore.

Yep, should probably be reported as a bug against the website. Saw that a few days ago, deleted the tracker
and it started seeding again to peers connected via DHT or PEX. Seems ibiblio did an update on the terasaur
tracker two days ago ...

Just upgraded my Mageia 2 to Mageia 3 rc2 on my laptop and ran into the following things (so far):

- Dependencies of AcrobatReader_enu prevented installation
- Dependency of shorewall <-> shorewall-core prevented installation
- nss_updatedb generated /var/lib/misc/passwd.db and /var/lib/misc/group.db files that
crashed everything that accessed the database (kdm, login, getent passwd etc.
- kscreen is missing a dependency on libkscreen making kded4 crash.

Thought you wanted to know...

Best

I installed Mageia 3 Beta 2 on my Dell Latitude D810. It's cursed with ATI graphics and Broadcom BCM4318 wireless. Dealing with this "problem child" since Mandriva 2010, I know to install using the Vesa driver and also remembered to uncheck the box when prompted to remove unused hardware during the installation (since it removes drivers for the hardware I use). I configured media sources and reinstalled software packages that I regularly use. Everything works fine and I like the improvements but there is one annoying thing. When adding software, there is no longer the arrow at the bottom of the right hand scroll so you can move one item at a time down the list. This makes it difficult with those of us using laptops to look through a list of similarly named items unless we plug in a mouse with a scroll wheel. It's not impossible and I was able to get the needed Gstreamer plug-ins I was looking for after a few tries but the point is, I had to try a few times to make sure I didn't pass over a needed plugin. I don't know if this qualifies as a real bug or not. It's something that "bugs" once in a while when there are a lot of similarly named packages brought up in a search but most of the time, it's a non issue.

Oh, I forgot to take notes and it's been a few days. The update was not smooth (after install). I don't have the specifics anymore but there were some failed downloads at the end and the update quit. I was unable to get it to finish but I used urpmi --auto-update in terminal which did complete the update. I rebooted then tried the update from the control center again and it told me everything was up to date. I think it's related to dagnygren's problem above. Again, nothing terrible but a bit of turbulance that could perhaps be easily smoothed over. I would have to reinstall the system to duplicate the problem exactly. I don't really want to as I'm enjoying the computer right now.

No problems in function noted here, but most, or all, of the updates of March 13 (Yesterday) seem to be unsigned, and as of today the update produced the following warning:

Code: Select all
Installation failed, some files are missing:

You may need to update your urpmi database.

Try to continue anyway?

I clicked "No"

Wait some time for the mirrors to synchronize and try again. Cauldron is very alive now so this can happen.

That does not mean the updates are unsigned, only that those packages are missing from your mirror.

I do have an issue that is not going away (with updates) on my Dell Latitude D810. That is, when I leave it running without using it, the screen goes black (as it should) but when I go after that to try to use it, when I get the password prompt and enter the password, it doesn't accept the password. Instead, I have to log out and log back in (at which time my password is accepted). This wasn't an issue the first couple of days after I installed the system but has been a problem for about a week now. Again, not a big deal and only slightly annoying but I do want to contribute my findings to the process.

Then please report that as a bug, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly

For the past three days, attempting to update has produced this message:

Installation failed, some files are missing:
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... noarch.rpm
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... noarch.rpm
You may need to update your urpmi database.

However, I found it was possible to download and install these files manually. This seemed odd, so I felt it was worth mention.

I think it may have something to do with the mirrors and not really a bug because I've had this but then waited a bit, rebooted and tried again and it worked. I ready someplace about waiting for the mirrors to stabilize so I've been going with that hypothesis.

...but then again 3 days????? Do you have a 64 or 32 bit system? I have a 32 bit and the problem has come up now and again but I've worked around it by doing the old "urpmi --auto-update" as a su when the Control Center GUI doesn't come through as it should.

64 bit system here. I need to visit here more often, it seems.
All updates and functions seem OK now, with the single and possibly self-inflicted problem that Mageia's Arduino IDE does not seem to launch. I see the following error message:
