[SOLVED],Mageia 2 RC - Sluggish with Desktop effects enabled

Postby cuz2000m » May 17th, '12, 21:32

Hi All,
I installed RC version of Mageia and was greeted with an extremely slow system. I realized that when I disabled the desktop effects, the system reacts normal to opening windows and starting applications. A "top" does not show high CPU or memory usage. I have an i5 quad-core and 8 Gigs of RAM in my system. If I change the desktop effects composition type from OpenGL to XRender it is much better but still a little sluggish.
I can provide further details on my system if needed. This wasn't a problem in Mageia 1. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

Thanks
Cuz.

It happened to me to once in clean install of beta3 I think. I just disabled desktop effects as I don't care much. Functionality is much more important to me. But I would be glad if someone found the reason for that.

Mageia 2 it's subjectively more responsive on this otherwise not very powerful desktop (Dell Optiplex GX280).

Subjectively M2 is "more responsive" then M1. In my experience
that's true. But, IMO, that's more a result of the Linux Kernel being
more efficient ( not faster ). I'm going to be more interested in
the power consumption difference between M1 & M2 on my laptop.
M1 uses the 2.6.38 Kernel that has a known power consumption
issue. That issue has been solved and no longer an issue on
the Kernel used on M2 ( 3.3.6 ). I'll be making those measurements
after M2 gets released.

The Kernel performance improvements over the years are more
perceivable on lower performance platforms. I've quite a few friends
with old WinBlows XP laptops that I've switched over to Puppy Linux.
They're blown away with the performance much of which can be
attributed to the more efficient Linux Kernel and compact OS.
The system is magically not really faster.

@cuz2000m: What graphics card is used and which driver? Please provide the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and the output of
Code: Select all
glxinfo | head -25
You may need to install glxinfo package for the latter ...

You're currently using the free nouveau driver. Fire up drakx11 and select your graphics card, say yes to the question if you want the proprietary driver to be installed and reboot. You may need to enable the nonfree repos for this. That should do it.

Thanks for the input. I did that but am still receiving the problem when I re-enable the OpenGL setting. The kwin window manager also tells me that the following could not be activated.
Code: Select all
Box Switch
Desktop Cube
Dashboard
Desktop Grid
Dialog Parent
Fade
Highlight Window
Login
Logout
Minimize Animation
Outline
Present Windows
Screenshot
Slide
Sliding popups
Startup Feedback
Taskbar Thumbnails

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake | grep -i vga
and again the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and please also provide info which graphics card you're using.

Both of them, install the Nvidia driver how Doktor5000 says. The error with opengl is general, I'm in arch-kde and have the same problem.

Graphics ssues here, too, with an ATI card, a Radeon HD 4650.

I chose the desktop cube for effects after installing the proprietary driver (on invitation). But the cube has never worked. Eventually, I discovered that desktops do not switch at all. That entire function is broken in my case.

Doktor, here are the items you requested above from cuz:

@cuz200m: As you can see you're still using the nouveau driver, so no proper hardware accleration.

@DShelbyD: I'd prefer to have a seperate thread for that, as you're using another graphics driver, and it's quite disturbing to have two support threads in one mixed and mangled ...
And you don't even tell which desktop effects you're using whether it's Compiz or maybe those builtin to KDE.

I noticed this behavior weeks ago(@doktor5000, you remember the thread about ROSA marathon in mandrivauser.de). I've installed cauldron on 3 different machines:
1) laptop with a GF 6100 (256MB shared VRAM)
2) desktop pc with a GF 6200 (512MB VRAM)
3) desktop pc with a GF 7300 (256MB VRAM)

with the Nvidia-driver 295.40 i couldn't use kwineffects with openGL on 1 and 2, whereas on 3 all were fine.
with Nvidia-driver 295.49 it runs flawlessly on 2 and 3. On 1 it's usable but with a heavy CPU load.

I think problem is prior related to unsufficient hardware.
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root

Hi doktor5000
Apparently it did not install the first time. I ran drakx11 again and reinstalled the proprietary drivers. The problem seems to be sorted.

Thanks for the help.
Cuz.
