Problems with Mageia 2 beta 3

Postby Myles » May 4th, '12, 10:20

I am a n00by somewhat. I have been using Mandriva for a while but I am pi#$%$%d off with Mandriva 2011 which is why I am trying Mageia. I haven't tried Mageia #1 except in the Live CD and I didn't particularly like it but I thought I'd give #2 beta 3 a test run. I have it loaded into VirtualBox #4.0.8_OSE r71778 running under Mandriva 2011.

Okay, problems I have encountered so far:
I installed Wine and VLC from the repositories successfully. Wine installed correctly but VLC didn't install into the "Sound & Video" menu structure - I have to execute it from a command line. Is this normal in Mageia for VLC?
Also I cannot get ANY internet access working from Mageia through VirtualBox. I did IFCONFIG and defined the HW address of the virtual PCI Network card to my Router's allowed client list but still no go. This is probably a VirtualBox issue.
I much prefer the Mageia KDE desktop (the way it USED to be in Mandriva) with actual menus not this ROSA rubbish. It looks good and I hope to be able to test out the sound as in the last 3 installs of Mandriva - since PulseAudio - I never have sound till I disable PulseAudio and play with AlsaMixer to get my Audigy sound card working. I see someone else has had issues with their sound on Beta 3 as well.

Anyway, I have trawled the VirtualBox forum and will post problems there.

I hope to update this with any outcomes - positive or negative.

With regards VirtualBox, did you set the vm to use "bridged network" in the settings page? this catches a few out.

Just installed vlc on mine and it shown in the "sound and video" menu, so cant really help on that.

Pulse is a pain sometimes, and for some reason the audigy card defaults to digi out instead of analogue.
Please post what Graph card do you have. Most cards today have HDMI audio on them, so the system might be defaulting to that.

Pete

Edit:

Just thought, your using a VM. check the auido settings aswell. check that is using the correct driver.

Definitely not. Can you please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -ql vlc | grep "vlc.desktop"

Okay, I just loaded up the VM again and just decided to check the "Sound & video" menu - well, what did I find this time but the entry for VLC! I swear after I installed it it wasn't there - truly!!!!

Depending on the desktop environment, and the speed of your box it may take some seconds or more for the menu to refresh. You can observe this if you keep the menu open during installation of some program, which installs a new menu entry, some seconds after the installation finishes, the open menu will automatically close, this is the signal that it has been updated.

For the network problems with your VM, please open up another thread, there's an unwritten "golden" rule which says only one problem per thread. Cheers :)

Okay, thanks for that info. Next time I will deal with each problem in a separate post.
I have already posted my problems to to the VittualBox forum as well.
