After a few days of the 32 bit version working well in vmware(vmware tools installed)
I got a boot error with X unable to start

Fatal Server error:
could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock

Looks like a showstopper

Are you running X86_64 bit version?

I remember a memory leak in sun java a few years ago - it only showed up on 32 bit cause
of the higher number of registers/longer integers in 64 bit. But it was still present even in 64 bit.

No, I have only 32 bit system.
Virtual machine has 1 GB RAM, 20 GB HDD. Other options are default.
