I did different installations of Beta3, one with KDE and 2 with Gnome, all from the DVD. In individual package selection I took great care to setup KDE without any Gnome packages and vice versa.

So I was really surprised to see the first update run of the fresh Gnome system - around 500 packages altogether, which is not surprising. Surprising is the large number of KDE packages (roughly around 130)! There were even large ones like kde4-wallpapers, several KDE games and handbooks and lots of KDE libraries. Even kde4-desktop and others. I can not understand how such packages could be dependencies of a pure Gnome installation.
I know, I should give a list of all "surprising" packages for a proper report but I think this would be too much (list of all installed packages). That's why I did not write a bug report but posted here, my be somebody has an explanation.

After the update (remember: first update after installation!) I was informed that more than 180 packages were now "orphans" - how could that be directly after installation + updates? And now the surprise: almost all orphans were KDE packages! Causes the question: why were they installed in the first place? If they are orphans now although I did not de-install anything, they could not have been installed because of dependencies!

Must have been something wrong. I tried to update my kde today. A minimal instal and it wanted to update all my apps. But no change in version nr only the kernel that is diffrent. Strange behaviour that it wanted me to update the packages but it's really no update. You should maybe check what you installed in the first place could there be some gnome in your kde install that you missed or maybe it's the packager of some app that made a misstake somewhere. It could happen.

I have a Gnome setup and am wondering about the many KDE packages in the updates. I removed all the KDE packages, nothing was changed, all apps and the system are running ok. So all these KDE packages were not needed at all.

Maybe you can attach your /root/drakx/ddebug.log file so we can see what's happen

Unfortunately it's too late for that, already did another installation test on the same partition.
But I experienced the same the other way round with a simple KDE installation showing unwanted Gnome packages.

When I look at all the installations I did during the last 2 weeks one single point looks back at me: a more and more complex meshwork of dependencies+requirements. All these dependencies may be technically correct and each of them could be explained very well. The problem seems to be the requirements which seem to rely too often on the individual opinion of the single packager (like the telepathy and handbook issues).

Where does that lead us? In the near future will I have to install 5GB while I only want to add one small application to my otherwise task-foo-minimal ?
