[SOLVED] No shut down

PostPosted: Apr 21st, '12, 10:37

I have tested Mageia 2 Beta 3 and my first reaction was: why must Mageia 2 like Mandriva 2011 change the GUI to something strange? The same with Ubuntu 12.04 and many other distros. Has the developing of the distro come to an end so you must do something to show up a new face, change the GUI look. (Uhm.. we couldn't find something better to do).

Anyway, when I tried to shut down the system, I couldn't find anyway to do it. Of course I knew about REISUB but shouldn't it be better to make the shut down in GUI?

I don't feel ready to migrate from Mandriva 2010.2 yet? You must do it better first.

Regards
nicki

Please send all these questions to the Gnome project - because it is obvious that you are talking about the Gnome shell. Mageia did nothing to that desktop, it is how Gnome wants it to be.

Alternatives:
- Use Gnome classic (without Gnome shell), which looks like classical Gnome.
- Use one of the other desktops (KDE, LXDE, Xfce

Why has Mageia accepted it to be in this way? Who is responsible for the distro? Mageia or Gnome? Why use Gnome 3 when Gnome 2 was better?

1. Because Mageia did not want to change the original behavior. Especially the shutdown issue was discussed (I did not follow this discussion though, I don't care about that issue).
2. Mageia is responsible for the distro, Gnome is responsible for the Gnome project, the same as the maintainer of any software is responsible for his software.
3. Because Mageia decided to use Gnome 3. It was discussed at length and in public. If your personal opinion does not match this decision you are free to leave out the gnome shell and use Gnome the classical way (as told before).

Did you read the other thread I pointed to?

Thanks wilcal. Get them what they deserve. I mean, it is in Beta 3 status and shouldn't have been after Alfa status.

Who is "they"? All those who discussed the issue and did not have the same opinion as you?

Oh, did I mention that if you don't like the gnome-shell (as you wrote anyway) you must not install it? That is for sure an easier way than to keep bothering others about something you can change for yourself by just one mouse click.

Thanks again wobo. My intention is not to be rude.

When I wrote "They" I mean those who is in charge for the missing of the shutdown. Well, I found it later on.
It was hidden: First log out and then in the upper right corner there was the shut down. Very strange.

Yes I know now that I can change to Gnome classic and how to do it. But why mess around with Gnome 3 when so many people are having problem with it?

Thanks
nicki

No extra logout necessary. To shutdown you go to the upper right corner, click on the user name, you see the logout option at the last position of the scrolldown menue. Press ALT and "Logout" changes to "Shutdown". As I am not an experienced Gnome user I took my time to look into the Gnome manual.

There are 2 groups of users who want to have Gnome 3 for Mageia: those who like the new Gnome-shell and those who don't. Consequently Mageia offers both versions. IMHO this is all Mageia could do.

It's not? Then you do hide your intention very good...

Because there are quite some people who do like it, but they don't scream arround.
Because GNOME2 is no longer maintained upstream, so we wouldn't be able to provide security fixes and so on (at least it would be a hell for the maintainers)
Because life is going on and things change. And as always in the last few hundred thousand years, humanity will adapt to change.

So, if you don't like GNOME as it is now, why use it? There's plenty of alternatives out there!

I hope there is possible to have an opinion that cross over others. Otherwise we should not have discussions about anything.

Well "Get them what they deserve" is not the kind of discussion style I prefer, but maybe it is to you.
if yes, I will just not discuss with you, I prefer to stay civilized...

First of all I have to apologize if I have made you upset. I am really sorry.
Then you can take a look inside https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5526
where you can find some comments like:

"Oh my...if you let it sit long enough at
the log in screen the need for Admin
Authentication goes away. How long it
has to sit? More then a few minutes
anyway. Crazy.

I'll keep poke'n at this thing."

Here you can see who is the target for my "rudeness".

If any other feel they are provoked, I am really sorry.

But I still think that Gnome 3 should be better developed before publishing.

I hope we can leave this item for the moment and go further.

Did you experience this yourself? I can't make much sense of it. I never heard about that one nor did I experience it before (but I already said that I'm no Gnome expert). Sounds weird enough to install Gnome just to check this out.

Back on topic, somebody suggested shipping the Shutdown button by default, and the answer from the package maintainer was essentially:
Sure, why not, if someone feels responsible for it and wants to do this, but then he also needs to update it quite often, as it's a GNOME extension and version bound to the GNOME shell. Nobody wanted to do it, so we don't have it by default and it can only be accessed via the Alt key, simple as that.

Well, you're still free to manually install the extension to show the shutdown button by default. Just complaining helps noone and is rather unconstructive, if you ask me.

I installed Beta3 with Gnome and looked: There is no root password necessary. To shutdown you

- click on the username on the right end of the top bar. The last item there says "Standby".
- press the ALT key and "Standby" changes to "Shutdown". Click on that and you will see the usual options "Shutdown - Reboot - Cancel".

wobo wrote:I installed Beta3 with Gnome and looked: There is no root password necessary. To shutdown you

As I just reported in:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5526

Here's the methodology that I used to recreate this problem.

1. A totally new today, and up-to-date, install of Mageia 2, Gnome 3 only.

2. Reboot to login screen, login to Gnome 3

3. Click on the (User)... icon in upper right hand corner of desktop

4. Vertical menu bar presented does not give a restart or shutdown choice

( Now I'm Really Really gonna throw a wrench into this thing )

5. Execute the next steps in 60 seconds or less

6. Clicking on Logout... choice takes you to a window in the middle of
the desktop giving you 60 seconds to change your mind. Clicking on the
"Log Out" button takes you back to login screen.

7. Click on the Icon in the upper right hand corner of Log in screen
( circle with stick in it ). That gives you three choices. They are:

Suspend
Restart
Power Off

8. Quickly execute one of the following two steps:

9. If you select "Restart" you are immediately presented with a request
for Admin Authentication. Typing the Admin PW the system will reboot
the system normally.

10. If you select "Power Off" you are immediately presented with a request
for Admin Authentication. Typing the Admin PW the system will power off
the system normally.

11. Warning!!!! If you select the "Cancel" button thing in 9 or 10 ( within
the 60 seconds ) really bad things can happen including a system freeze.

If when you get back into the login screen from Gnome 3 you wait 60
seconds or more the system will reboot, or power off, normally without
the need for the Admin Authentication.

I love it when I find stuff like this. It makes my day. :D

Just replied in the bug report:
Fresh Beta3, latest updates, no changes to any settings except for the package .

I repeated each single point. Results:

4. Why did you not use the ALT key here? It changes the last option in the vertical menu bar to "Shutdown".
5. - 7. Done
9. + 10. The clicks on "Restart" and "Power off" immediately do what they are supposed to do, no password required.

Now I checked it again on a second Gnome installation of Beta3 on my desktop - same here: can't confirm.

Oh My! Thanks Wobo. More testing is needed on
this one by me. Remember the keyboard glitch
on Mandriva back in Ver 9.x. USB keyboards
on slower computers would work and on fast
computers would'nt. I fear this one may bite
us in the behind in the coming months.

I'll try this on several different computers
here in the next days.
