:D Very fast installation :D
:D Very nice look :D
Just installed.
Just a minor blemish, during the installation there shows a couple of picturs marketing Mageia, but its marketing Mageia 1 in two or three pictures.
Havn't begin testing yet but it realy looks nice. :D

Mageia 2 Beta 3; first impressions

Postby isadora » Apr 18th, '12, 20:18

Installed Mageia 2 Beta 3 into a virtual machine, VMware® Player 4.0.2 build-591240.
Defined 1500 MB memory and 50 Gb disk-space, as well as the usae of 2 processors.

Installation took only 11 minutes, and went without issues.
First boot into desktop also without any problems, network up and running.
Configured media, had to disable "CD-ROM core media", and added update-sources.
No updates available ;-)

Success here too.

I'm a go on the Gnome, 32-bit Live-CD on my test system:

Intel, P4 530J 3.0 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2, LGA 775
GigaByte GA-8I915G Pro i915G MoBo
Marvel Yukon 88E8001 Gigabit LAN
Intel High Def Audio, Azalia (C-Media 9880) (snd-hda-intel)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (Intel 82915G)
Kingston 3G DDR400 PC-3200
Hard Drive turned off
Kingwin KF-91-BK SATA Mobile Rack
Kingwin KF-91-T-BK SATA Mobile Rack Tray
Sony CD/DVD-RW DWQ120AB2
1920x1080 LCD

Came up in full Gnome mode. This is configured to be
bascially a diskless workstation in this mode. Some
Live-CD's don't like platforms without HD's. Mageia 1&2
have no problems with that.

I'm a partial go on my laptop in 64-bit Gnome:

Dell Vostro 1015
Celeron 925 2.3Ghz 64-bit 1MB L2 cache 800Mhz FSB 45nm
1GB DDR3-1333 ( PC3 10600 )
Battery: 11.1vdc Li-ion Type: F287H
HD 500GB Seagate
1366x768 15in LCD

Gnome came up in fallback mode and the Live-CD did
not recognize the Atheros WiFi hardware but did fine
with the RealTek wired LAN. I'll have to play a little
more with this.

The 64-bit KDE4 Live-CD came up like a champ, recognized
the Atheros WiFi and is ready to Rock-n-Roll from the get go.

Yahoooooo!!!!!!!!

Lots more testing to do.

No love here, just a cli.
My video card from lshw is:
Code: Select all
*-display
                description: VGA compatible controller
                product: RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]
                vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
                physical id: 5
                bus info: pci@0000:01:05.0
                version: 00
                width: 32 bits
                clock: 33MHz
                capabilities: pm msi vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
                configuration: driver=fglrx_pci latency=0
                resources: irq:18 memory:d0000000-dfffffff ioport:d000(size=256) memory:febe0000-febeffff memory:fea00000-feafffff
I'm told on boot that I need firmware from the Tainted repository for the video card but it's less than obvious how one enables the Tainted repositories from the command line.

Clean install on another new hard drive (thank you Maplins for staying open until 20:00).
Minimal minimal LXDE install. Guess what - no X11 selected by this route. You need to spot the fact that there is no X11 configuration in the post-install screen and click the button there to configure it. That pulls in task-x11. Why?

Also, no auto-mounting of external USB storage - not even icons in the filemanager. Still trying to sort that out but short of test-installing each and every likely looking suspect in the software manager I have no idea how to fix it or what might be missing. All the packages I thought were essential are present; udisks2, polkit-1, gvfs

UPDATE: No sound either as pulse has taken it. I thought that a minimal installation would avoid the Pulse trap, but it's there! I am re-installing to see if I can clear these faults.

UPDATE2: I haven't got to the desktop yet - just been playing with a few options to get LXDE installed without Pulse. Seems there is no way to avoid it. I still fail to understand how a desktop designed for minimal hardware can afford to run such a hog as Pulse.

My installation is taking considerably longer than 11 minutes (using a 64-bit install DVD), but I am really liking the "welcome to mageia" splashed that go by when I install. The package management seems to work much better than in beta 2. I would like one thing before this gets a final release though. Native configuration for my hardware.

my 64 bit install took about 40 minutes.

i cant seem to install software. i get a message, installing software i believe and then the machine
freezes up. this is using the mageia control center.

i cant install the ati updates because of this.

the new background is a huge improvement.

IMO timing a DVD based install is a bit
unfair as performance of the DVD drives
vary widely and mostly slowly. Probably
best would be using the boot.iso file
from a local repo over a 1GB LAN. Local
install drive would be an SSD drive.
I don't have an SSD drive yet ( soon )
but I can get sub 10 minute installs
on a full Mageia 1/2 install to a 1TB HD.

I have a successful 64-bit DVD KDE install to:

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz overclocked to 3.8GHz LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core
GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GV-N440D3-1GI GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Seagate 120GB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive in Kingwin Mobile Rack
Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model AD-7260S-0B
Thermaltake V9 BlacX Edition with Docking Station
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler
Kingwin KF-91-BK SATA Mobile Rack
Kingwin KF-91-T-BK SATA Mobile Rack Tray
Logitech K520 Wireless USB Keyboard & Mouse

The install recognized the Nvidia GeForce GT 440, installed the necessary
Nvidia driver and properly set the resolution of the Samsung 26' terminal
to 1920x1200.

Do people never read the errata? We point to it from at least three seperate pages: the blog, the download website and the
Ok, the errata seems not to be completely correct, since it is not only affecting machines like mine (with am Intel sandy bridge integrated graphics and an ATI card), but also machines with only an ATI card.
So actually there is an easy solution for those people having both:
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... s_hardware

For peole having only an ATI device, it's a bit more complicated:
  • Either you configure the online repos during installation, the nonfree firmware (and if you choose so, the fglrx driver) are pulled and it should work.
  • Or you install without online repos and end up at a tty, now add your repos: urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist '$MIRRORLIST'
Then call drakx11 and configure the graphics card
I can't really test the solution for people with ATI only, because I have no such device.

Oliver

One thing I forgot here:
This is a beta release. That means it's for testing, finding bugs and reporting them
And - as my link implies - by reporting them, I'm talking about using bugzilla.

Hi,
Yesterday I downloaded Mageia 2 beta 3 LiveCD kDE (32bit)

My video card is Nvidia, so, I followed the guidance of the blog/wiki mageia. In my first test, I choose:
F6 kernel option: defaut
at end of line I wrote: "xdriver=nouveau"

I did not install, just check the functioning with the LiveCD

In the first rapid test everything worked ok
nvidia video card etc.
Another day I will test with more detail and other machines.

Installed fine and works brilliantly on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520.
Downloaded the x86_64 DVD and installed with KDE.

Specs of this system:
Intel Core i7 2640M 2.8GHz (Sandy Bridge)
8GB DDR3 RAM 1333MHz
Seagate ST9500420AS 500GB HDD
Intel Integrated Graphics

Installed kernel-firmware-nonfree for wireless from the nonfree repo.

I install Mageia-2-beta3-LiveCD-KDE4-Europe1-Americas-i586-CD. I use radeon.modeset=0 because i couldn't boot. The install was very fast. After the install everything works except desktop effects. After the update i get this (see attachment) on restart and shutdown and the computer doesn't closes.

I hate that when a computer does not turn off.
That's why I've got that power switch on the
back of the chassis. :P

FWIW I've never run into a problem forcing off
a computer with an ext4 file system, which is
what Mageia uses.

Hi, First post here,

I got Mageia-2-beta3-LiveCD-KDE4-Europe1-Americas-x86_64-CD.iso running in vbox4.1.12

I like the look, But I can't comment on the kernel with my system, as it did not boot (iso to flash with unetbootin).

First time I tried to boot, computer said, "boot error".

Tried to boot in vbox, as a live-cd, and selected "install" from grub, and Mageia2b3 installed without fault.

My 2c.

Cheers, Glenn

IIRC unetbootin can't handle hybrid iso's. Try dd or mandriva-seed:

I do not know it is bug or intention. But it was working in Mageia 1.

After first boot into system there was automatic offer for adding software sources and updating into few minutes after login.

But it is not working in Mageia 2 at me. I had to add sources manually via MCC.
