[SOLVED] BOOTING prints kernel and initrd lines only

Postby laidlaws » Apr 8th, '12, 09:26

(Sorry for the mysterious Subject. I didn't want "Can't boot.")

Cauldron. After the latest upgrade, when I try to boot into Cauldron using GRUB, I see only two lines, the kernel and initrd lines from the bootloader. "Upgrading" and re-installing bootloader didn't help. I could boot into my Mageia 1 using Cauldron's GRUB menu. It sounds as though the following step has the problem.

What can I try next? I didn't try failsafe, because the error is right at the start. If I need to regenerate my initrd, how do I proceed, especially when I can't get into the OS?

Moved into the appropriate subforum, everything revolving around cauldron belongs in the Testing subforum.

Anyways, if you have another working installation or a live-cd, you could still boot that and chroot into your cauldron install and do updates and then do
Code: Select all
bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds
if still necessary.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

No objection to the move, but destination not stated.

Chrooted O.K., but could get no further. Command-line update failed with:

Can't read /proc/mounts: No such file or directory
Udisks daemon (udisks-daemon) is not running or not ready

mcc launched but had same problems.

bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds ran without any output, and didn't change anything.

Just a shot in the dark - if you have an IDE controller and have removed UUID's from menu.lst, you may have hit this bug:

Maybe, but my context is completely different. I would probably do a fresh install of Beta 3 anyway, and my main system is Mga1. I might as well leave it until then.

I have marked this as SOLVED, because I got back in. What caused it I don't know, and I haven't changed anything (yet.)

To get back in, I replaced the chainloader stanza in Mageia 1's menu.lst with the complete details from Cauldron's for the unadorned kernel (just in case.) I was then able to boot that entry from the GRUB menu.
