[SOLVED] Latest updates leaves Beta 2 almost unworkable

Postby nickdegraeve » Apr 2nd, '12, 08:22

I was supprisingly satisfied with the quuality of Beta 2 and I keep my system up-to-date but the latest batch of update has truly screwed up my system.

Main issue is that KDE pop-ups aren't rendered correctly. They appear double or not at all. If they appear they often stay on screen, aren't refreshed anymore and I can't click on any buttons anymore.

Anybody else experiencing these issues?
Shall I file a bug report?

Could you try creating a new user? If it does not happen there, it maybe was some hickup in the KDE updates.

After my updates this morning my 32-bit M2B2 seems ok.

is still a problem.

It doesn't happen with the new user. And today's updates didn't fix it.

Which KDE files can I safely delete to reset my workspace?

Actually all KDE config is saved under ~/.kde4
If there is an issue with the config in the user's HOME, a package update can't fix it.

So just rename ~/.kde4 and you have your KDE back, you can then either try and copy carefully parts of the old config back to the new .kde4 or just configure it again.

After updates on my 64 bit install, my task bar would not show up. I know when I see these kinds of problems, I
cd ~/.kde4/share/config
and delete the offending application's config file. For desktop troubles, brute force was delete *plasma*, log out/in
and reconfigure.Since plasma-desktop-appletsrc has my taskbar hiding setting, I probably could have just deleted it and rebooted.

As always, be sure to have backup of anything you delete.

It didn't work. Even with the new ~/.kde4 it's the same.

This morning's updates didn't help either.

Later today I'll try disabling Compiz. Maybe that helps.

Seems it was a Compiz issue: disabled the 3D Desktop Effects and everything appears back to normal again. I think I'm going to abandon Compiz completely as most effects kan be achieved with native KDE4 functionality anyway.
