[SOLVED] Beta2: screen dimmed after wakeup

Wake-up after suspend is working fine with wifi, sound and all other functions. The only problem is: after wakeup the screen is dimmed, function keys for brightness do not work.
When I reboot brightness is as usual.

You mean dimmed like slightly less brightness, the same as when in energy saving mode, or dimmed as in (nearly) no backlight at all?
Also is that a laptop, and if so, what model/manufacturer? And what graphics chip and driver is used?

Dimmed slightly.
Laptop (do desktops go into suspend?),
Samsung R530,
NVIDIA GeForce 310M (GT218),
Modul GeForce 6100 to 360
nvidia-current-kernel-3.3.0-desktop-0.rc7.1.mga2-295.20-2.mga2

"Screen Brightness" and "dim screen" are deactivated in KDE settings.

Mageia 1 did not show this wrong behavior at wakeup so I never checked the function keys - now I did: they do not work in Mageia 1 either. But that's no problem for me, I do not need them. The point is the wrong screen status at wakeup.

For Mageia 1 that would be normal, the backlight support was only properly working starting with kernel 2.6.39.

To get more information and for debugging/fiddling purposes, you may want to have a look at

Thx for the links. Unfortunately the Fedora links are not usable (different graphics, necessity to build a kernel - which would be necessary at each kernel update).
The script for archlinux does not change anything. But that's not really important.

I think my previous post was misleading: the problem bothering me is not the Fn keys for brightness - I do not need them. All I need is the screen waking up in the same state of brightness as it was before I closed the lid.

BTW: I just checked: on the same laptop the screen wakes up to normal brightness in Mageia 1, Mandriva 2010.2, Mandriva 2011.0, Ubuntu and Windows 8. The only 2 systems with the bug are Mageia 2 Beta 2 (fresh) and Mageia 2 Cauldron (updated from Alpha1).

Now I installed Mageia 2 Beta 2 on a i586 netbook - screen wakes up just normal. Which confuses me a bit:

1. different machines but same software (Cauldron) - normal behavior on the netbook, wrong behavior on the laptop.:
2. same machine (laptop) but different software - normal behavior on various other installations, wrong behavior on both Mageia Cauldron installations.

Well, remember BRM's problem with the samsung backlight? Same general issues as you describe ...

Was that in the Mageia (en or de)- or MandrivaUser.de-Forum? If I know that I can search faster :)

But apart from that: how can it be a general issue if it works in Mandriva and Mageia 1 but not in Mageia 2 Beta 2?

Found it and read the whole 3 pages of the thread, it is not the same issue. BRM needs to get dimming the screen working, it is always on 100%. Here the issue is that the screen does not wake up from suspend with full brightness, only with (best guess) 50%. As the same Samsung does not show that misbehavior in Mandriva nor Mageia 1 it is not looking like a Samsung issue but more like a bug in Mageia 2 Beta.

To me it is an annoying bug because you close the lid and use suspend to save battery while not using the laptop. But when you open the lid you want to have it ready without system startup and application start and document loading. Not mentioning that you have to save work and shut down instead of simply close the lid.

The logical follow-up should be a bug report in Bugzilla, I was told a while ago. :)
But unfortunately I do not know where to look for useful information to add to the mere description of the behavior. Neither syslog nor x related logs say anything there. Nevertheless this is important to be solved.

Normally in KDE the battery plasmoid and the settings are just two clicks away, there you should be able to readjust brightness,
i.e. lower it slightly to refresh it and then push it up to the maximum again, does that help?

I already looked at the energy settings in KDE, it's like in Mageia 1.

But then I changed, saved and then re-changed the settings and the issue is gone.
In KDE settings -> Power management In the first section (Settings for powersaving) I had unmarked the first setting "Screen brightness" and the slider was at 50%. This caused the screen to show only 50% after waking up from a suspend status. Now I activated that option and set the slider to 100% - screen wakes up with 100% brightness.

I don't know why I have to do this in Cauldron, I did not have to set anything in Mageia 1.

But anyhow - solved. Thx doctor for encouraging me to re-do what I had done before :)

Sure, no problem 8-)

BTW: That's always one of my first steps after initial installation, making sure that screen brightness is always enforced to 100%.
