[SOLVED] Playing a DVD on M2B1 and probably M2B2

I mentioned this is the "Mageia 2 Alpha 2 first impressions"
that DVD's do not play.

What RPM's would you expect to have to install
to play a DVD on Mageia 2. Given the following
are already installed.

libdvdcss2
libdvdnav4
libdvdread4

KDE GUI

Do note that a CD is automatically recognized, loaded
and played by KsCD.

Please be *a bit* more precise. What do you mean by DVD's, i assume DVD-Video with standard-issue MPEG2 video, protected via CSS? Additional copy-protection, maybe? Also what do you mean they do not play? Do you mean they don't show up via the notification applet, or they can't be played back, and if that's the case via which media player?

Normally you don't need anything besides a media player for a DVD which is not CSS-protected and has no additional copy-protection. You only need libdvdcss2 to be able to play CSS-protected discs. For discs with additional copy-protection, there could be problems playing those at all.

But i'd just give it a try via VLC media player -> Media -> Open disc -> DVD (and eventually select "No disc menus" if you only want the main movie).

Gimme 24hrs to do so more testing. I'm getting
a partial success on Mageia 1. I am using a
standard off the shelf commercial DVD(s).

I think Dragon is the default Media player in KDE
and Totem in Gnome.

This is the first time I've done any testing of
DVD on any of my Mageia systems

I admit to being somewhat confused on this one.
I've tried to play a Commercial video DVD(s) that
plays just fine on my Phillips DVD player and
my Samsung Blu-Ray player. I've tried that DVD(s)
on three different Mageia 1 platforms and two
Mageia 2 platforms. All respond somewhat
differently. What is common is that all the
platforms do just fine with a commercial audio
CD. The common DVD thread is all the platforms
see the DVD, even report the name correctly,
but fail to play in some modes reporting that
an error has occurred and a codec needs to be
installed to play. I've tried everything I
know to find and install that codec but no go.

I'd like to ask some folks here who are familiar
with the mounting process of a disc on Mageia
take a look at this and see how it does on
their system.

I just tried two Commercial DVDs. I tried those
DVD's on my new M2B2 64-bit platform. In Gnome
trying to play with Totem I get the following error
message:

"Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not
have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disc.

Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be
able to play this media."

Logging out of Gnome and loggin in to KDE4
the disc plays just fine with Dragon. Back in Gnome
Dragon does not even see the DVD but Nautilus does.
I've seen the play in KDE and not play in Gnome
on Mandriva in the past.

So I'm pretty confused. I've seen this all before
with Mandriva. I gave up trying to play a DVD
on Mandriva years ago. So it may be a decision
to just let it all go and Mageia 1/2 just handles
DVD's in a narrow mode, that being KDE4/Dragon
only.

Dragon and Totem should be dropped as default IMHO, as they rely on gstreamer, and so need additional packages for most popular audio and video codecs, also the automatic installation of those codec packages fails, as urpmi's packagekit backend is not as functional as it needs to be for that.

I would completely support moving to something else
that works in both KDE and Gnome. I don't think
this is a critical issue, just maybe make note of
it and put the request into the Mageia 3 things
to try or do.

I've installed smplayer and that plays DVD's
wonderfuly well in both Gnome and KDE4.
I'm gonna call this one [SOLVED] as
we do have a way of playing DVD's.

Before Mga1 there was a discussion about media players and iirc I then opted for using mplayer with its different guis. There's the qt based smplayer for the kde front end gnome-mplayer for the gnome folks.
