Mageia 2 Alpha 2 first impressions

Postby wilcal » Dec 16th, '11, 07:45

Mageia-2-alpha2-i586-DVD.iso
Gnome into Mageia 1 Vbox

Went in like a charm. All my apps installed
without a hitch. All updates went in and system
came back without a problem.

Openshot opens without a problem so

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3732

appears to be solved.

httpd ( Apache ) still is not started on boot

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3069

is still a bug. Will do some more testing tomorrow.
This message from Mageia 2 Alpha 2 in Vbox.

Additional to wilcal's experiences:
Mageia-2-alpha2-i586-DVD.iso
KDE into VMWare-machine.

Time between start of installation and fully booted desktop less then 20 minutes.
No errors, all went smoothly.

One exception though, Core Release was not able to be added to the repository-list, will try again later.
And Bug 3458 still exists:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3458

Real installation on a Samsung R530 laptop (Intel CPU, 2Gb RAM, Nvidia graphics, Atheros wifi, Intel webcam)
Installation medium: Alpha 2 DVD x86_64

In the summary
- time settings are wrong. I set timezone to Berlin, Germany, which is GMT +0100, so the options should show 13:05 (hwclock set to local) or 14:05 (hwclock set to GMT), it shows 14:05 and 15:05 (1 hour ahead).
- bootloader recognizes not all installed systems: Mageia 1, Mageis Cauldron, Mandriva 2011, Windows 7 are listed. Not listed are: Ubuntu, Windows 7 Restore, Mandriva 2010.2 - Mageia 1, Mandriva 2011, Mandriva 2010.2 and Ubuntu show all installed systems in their respective grub menues.
- network - wifi: same old story.
- - chip is recognized, networks are found. Connection test fails, because of not started wpa_supplicant (see below)

At the end, when answering "Yes" to the question to look for and install updates it displays an empty screen for some seconds, then goes on with the "Congratulations" screen - no message about "no network available" or similar. So, in case the network setup did not succeed (as with wifi, see above) the user gets no information about the update failure.

Reboot.

KDE starts fine - wifi is up and working!

- sound - my laptop has 2 sound chips (Nvidia HDMI and Intel), after the installation the default is HDMI (not working). I have to switch main channel of kmix to "Internal analogue stereo". This setup stays, so I have to do it just once after installation.
- in repository setting I removed the line which points to the dvd (isadora already confirmed that) and then set a dedicated mirror, no problems
- after installation of cheese it started and found the webcam (wobo--> cheering!)
- used the "unexperienced user" approach for installing the proprietary nvidia driver (mcc->hardware->graphic server). Software was installed. After reboot nvidia splash comes up nicely.

So far, so good. The essentials apps all work (FF, LO, desktop effects (via KDE settings)).

Back to Windows 7.

Kernel problem:
Deprecated driver are used for IDE/PATA devices in mga2a2.
For example: More Info about this problem here http://forum.mandriva.com/en/viewtopic. ... 5&t=135420
But in /etc/fstab drives called are correct (sda, sdb etc...)

This bug: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1525

cdrom device for IDE/PATA should be called as sr0 (not hdc)
And partitions as sda, sdb (not hda, hdb)

Actually it's the other way around, Mandriva got it wrong they removed all PATA drivers,
can be easily seen by looking at the mailing lists and forums, also all the Powerpack users who aren't able
to install 2011 powerpack. Just for reference.

On a desktop machine: dual core Athlon 6000+, 4 MB, spare IDE HD, ATI/AMD HD4650 video.

What fails is the video. It is correctly identified, but during the boot the splash screen fails and there is a string of material racing by finally settling on a message (for a few seconds - not long enough to capture all of it): "fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb .... driver removed," followed by a series of messages containing "Failed to allocate: size 5760000, alignment 0 bytes, domains 2." Eventually, though, I arrive at the Gnome3 desktop, but the bad news is that I get fallback mode.

I pulled the video card and replaced it with an nVidia PNY 9600GT (I think that's the number), and all works splendidly, including a splash screen.

I tried this Gnome3 because I'm one of two living persons who actually likes Gnome 3 (not as well as KDE4, though), and I was eager to see what Mageia had done with it. Nice to find the gnome-shell-extensions available in MCC. I have spent only a minute playing with them to find out what works, given the issues experienced with Fedora 16 and (many fewer issues) Ubuntu 11.10, but in that time I see that the alternative status menu extension does indeed work, while the dock extension, user themes extension, and the workspace indicator extension do not. Those are the ones I want, and Gnome3 is a work-in-progress for all distros.

All in all, a great Alpha 2 -- but the video issue has to be resolved fairly quickly to attract new users who might be willing to try an early edition of Mageia 2.

I have a pure IDE/PATA system.
I can do install any release iso (with this problem and without it). And run it.
But i got all my ide-devices full working only with this wrong solution.
They do it wrong but it works.

Of course i'm still want a right solution. =)

Next: Plugged in an el-cheapo bluetooth dongle (usb). a few moments I see the bluetooth symbol. Now I turn on bluetooth on my smartphone and let it scan for devices - my marvin-2 (laptop) was found in seconds. punched in a pin and that's it. In Dolphin I see "Bluetooth" in the left column. I mark a mp3 file in my data folder, in the context menue I mark "send via bluetooth" - the smartphone appears as possible target. I get a signal on the phone and after I thumb'd "Ok" on the smartphone the upload started. The other way (from smartphone to laptop) it worked the same way.

In short: bluetooth dongle recognition and setup for data transfer worked out of the box!

After first updates I have no sound any more (which worked fine after installation of Alpha 2). Remembering the changes I checked:
- lib64alsa-plugins-pulseaudio is installed
- user is in group 'audio'
- rebooted after adding user to the group.
Now: sound is back.

As I booted into RL3 I recognized that the change for X starting on tty1 has not yet been made, otherwise I would not have landed on tty1 :)

Then I'm the other guy who likes Gnome 3. Do note that installing Mageia 2
Gnome 3 on a machine equipped with an nVidia board I had to install KDE
first then install the nVidia driver then install Gnome 3 ( MCC: task-gnome ).
Otherwise it will forever be stuck in Gnome 3 fallback mode.

Oh, I didn't install an nVidia driver. I just let it boot into the system using whatever driver the system saw fit to provide and was delightfully surprised to see it work after taking the trouble to pull the nVidia board out of the closet to replace the ATI.

And speaking of "out of the closet," I'm glad to know you're the "other guy who likes Gnome 3"! Now there are two. Anyone else?? ;-)

I would like to run the gnome-shell on my netbook (because I think such devices are the primary target of such a GUI) but the Intel graphic chip is too "weak". :(

Another Gnome Shell user here.

I have been trying the Live CD. It generally works well.

For my mobile broadband device, a MC760 USB stick using Virgin Mobile USA's network, it is not properly recognized by Gnome Network Manager.
Other, Gnome 3.x distros like Fedora 16, OpenSUSE 12.1, and Linux Mint 12 automatically see it and provide a configuration wizard to get it up and running.

Instead, I have to go through MCC and set it up as an analog telephone to get Internet access. That works and is what I have done in the past with Mageia 1 KDE.

Tried to set up a keyboard shortcut using the "Keyboard" configuration dialog and it aborted, producing a screen containing a frowning computer instructing me a problem has occurred and I would need to log back in.

It is odd the "Keyboard" configuration dialog is not in the System Settings group where you would expect it to be. I located it by doing a search from the Activities screen. In fact the contents of the System Settings group screen is very sparse.

Probably my 2012 resolution to try and get this

Has already been reported, either install acl package manually or update udev, which will also pull in the acl package.

Why is that addition necessary ? I Checked on Mageia 1, that was not the case.
and I had do do that on mageai 2 as for your installation

Tried to install my HP 5510 all-in-one printer, scanner, fax
machine and got the following message during the install:

Installation failed, some files are missing:

You may need to update your urpmi database.

Updated my local repo from mirrors.kernel.org and
got the same error. Will try again in a couple days.

Use a good mirror and see if you get the same errors. If not then something is missing in your local mirror.

Please file a bug report as the HP printer installer is looking for older rpm's that no longer exist.

You sure? I have a HP PSC all-in-one. Mageia 2 Alpha 2 (64-bit).

Just (5 minutes ago) did the following:
1. clicked on system-config-printer in MCC and received the same result as wilcal (some packages not installed, task-printing-hp was one of them)
2. Updated with 'urpmi --auto-update', rebooted.
3. Called the printer setup in MCC again and this time it went smoothly, at the end I see a cups window with my printer already recognized and ready to go.
Did some customizing and printed my own test page, works.

So, seems there has been an update of system-config-printer between your post and now. Installed here is system-config-printer-1.3.6-1.mga2

@wilcal: For cauldron look for a mirror which is syncing more often (the one I use syncs on a 2 hours schedule).

I shouldn't have suggested the bug report that hastily.
I believe wilcal syncs his local mirror once a day and at the rate cauldron is moving he should sync it again before reporting problems.
