[SOLVED]Mageia10 Plasma does not see my monitors

Postby banjo » Apr 23rd, '26, 17:47

I am running Mageia10 beta. The system has two monitors, and when I boot the computer it occasionally does not recognize one of the monitors. SDDM shows up only on the left monitor.

The right hand monitor is turned on in the photo.

When I log in, Plasma sees only the left hand monitor.

When I look at the System Settings, there is no indication that the right hand monitor exists.

Then, I log out and SDDM lights up both screens. I did not reboot, I just logged out.

I logged in again, and both screens are live, but the screen on the left has no background. The background that is usually displayed on the left monitor is displayed on the right hand monitor.

I logged out again, and logged back in again, and both monitors lit up with the correct backgrounds.

This has been happening for a while now. I am just bringing it up because I thought that it might be a hardware problem, But I don't thinik that is the case since both monitors appear to be working.

Here is the inxi

Code: Select all
$ inxi -b

I am running X11 because Wayland does not support the way I arrange the applications on my screens. I start Plasma with an empty session and the apps arrange themselves to their previous locations. That is not possible with Wayland, so I must run X11.

Any ideas about how to trouble shoot this issue would be helpful. I didn't see anything in bugzilla about this problem.

Thanks

In both cases, with only one or both monitors, the output of
Code: Select all
xrandr -q
would be needed.
Also take a look at the Xorg and kscreen logs in both cases to compare if there's any difference that you can spot.

I shut down completely and rebooted. It came up with both screens alive but no mouse. The mouse simply did not get connected. So I shut it down with the CLI and rebooted.

That time it came up with the mouse OK but only one screen. So I logged in and ran xrandr -q again and the screens repaired themselves. Both of them came on and the backgrounds are correct.

Here is the xrandr output when there was only one screen.

Code: Select all
$ xrandr -q

Looks the same as the other one.

I have Xorg.0.log, but I don't know what to look for in the log. Should I post it?

I could not find ~/.local/share/kscreen/kscreen.log. The file is not there. locate does not find the file.

I will try to reproduce the problem again and pay more attention to what is happening.

Seems your stored screen configuration might be borked then.

Does it always work, when you login as a freshly created user ?

I booted the computer to try making a new user, and it came up twice with no mouse. So I am suspicious of the hardware again. Also, SDDM has the same problem, it randomly doesn't see the mouse or a monitor.

So I have pulled all of the connectors off the back and plugged them in again to see if maybe this is being caused by flakey connections. After I did that it booted OK. But I have done that before and the problem returned.

I will have to try it for a while to see if the issue returns.

Stay tuned.

After reseating all of the usb connectors and the graphics connectors the system was working OK yesterday.

Then, this morning it failed to see the second monitor every time I booted. Invoking xrandr did not fix the issue this time, but it did show the failure mode. Here is the output from xrandr.

Code: Select all
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
HDMI-1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 267mm

   1600x900      60.00
   1280x1024     60.02
   1440x900      59.90
   1280x800      59.91
   1280x720      60.00    50.00    59.94

   640x480       60.00    59.94
   720x400       70.08
HDMI-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I have two monitors connected from the mother board, one is HDMI and the other is Display Port. The Display Port output goes to the monitor through a DP to HDMI converter. It is always the Display Port monitor that fails.

After several failed boots I pulled both of the display cables and reseated them again. The next boot worked OK and both monitors lit up. xrandr reports that it is talking to the monitor through HDMI-3.

Code: Select all
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3840 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
HDMI-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 267mm

   720x400       70.08

The only two ports on the mother board are the HDMI-1 and the Display Port, so I guess the DP-HDMI converter is somehow replying to xrandr. I don't know how that works.

Regardless, it is clear now that I have a connectivity issue to the second monitor. So Mageia10 is not causing my problems.

I will mark this issue SOLVED since it is clearly not a Mageia problem. I will continue to investigate the hardware issues. Perhaps my DP-HDMI converter is intermittent.

Thanks for the pointers and help looking into this.

What you could check is for your monitor and BIOS settings whether there are options for HDMI / DP deep sleep and disable them. Although when this also happens directly after boot, this should not apply in any case, but you never know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look.

The system is working OK today. I might swap out the DP-HDMI converter to see if that makes it more reliable.
