Openmpi on Mageia 10 cauldron i686

Postby megh » Nov 13th, '25, 04:30

Is there a plan to build openmpi for the 32 bit (i686) Mageia 10. At present it is not available in i686 cauldron. Upstream Openmpi has ended support for 32 bit from series 5.0 onward. However 4.1 series is still active. Would like to know if there are plans to include openmpi 4.1.x in Mageia 10 i686 or it is time to shift to MPICH. When I looked into the repos of cauldron, openmpi 5.0.x is included in the 64 bit (x86_64) version. It will be nice if the developers can comment on this issue.
Thank you.

Hello, so you would like us to downgrade a software to a previous release so that it's buildable for i586 ?

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to know if Openmpi will be included in Mageia 10 by taking ahead the same version which works in Mageia 9, especially when upstream is still actively maintaining series 4.1.x for 32 bit. I am new to Mageia so don't know what is the policy in case of such situations. Will a particular package be dropped entirely or that version will be carried ahead which is buildable for a particular architecture (i586 in this case). In same distros which still offer 32 bit support, the versions of the same software are different for the 64 bit and 32 bit platforms.
I found that the performance of Mageia 9 i586 was far superior in certain cases compared to other 32 bit distros. For example the test suite for Scalapack (compiled from source) on Mageia 9 i586 completed in just 73 seconds real time compared to nearly 1200 seconds on other 32 bit distros on exactly the same hardware with same tool-chain. So personally I would like Mageia 10 to continue providing what is available in Mageia 9, but don't know if that will be possible. It may not be straightforward to go with an older package using a new tool-chain (gcc 15.2 in this case).

It will be nice if the developers can comment on the policy followed in such cases.
Thank you.

Great to know Mageia is so efficient!
We are low on staff so packing two versions of "same" software need a *very* good reason.
Maybe you could ask on our developer mailing list and see of possibly some packager have interest in this himself.
Or even better get more packagers to work on Mageia :-)

Hi morgano,
How can I ask on the developer list? I am not a developer myself but only a user who is learning linux. Is there some forum for a wish list or something similar?

This would be the dev mailing list: https://ml.mageia.org/l/info/dev
Maybe have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mailing_lists to check how the mailing lists work.

Thanks doktor5000. I shall go through the wiki. Meanwhile I could compile openmpi 4.1.8 (on Mageia 10 Cauldron i686) from the source available upstream and run a few tests. It needed a few tweaks to work with gcc 15.2, but it was not very difficult. I don't know how to build rpms. If I succeed in building a working rpm, maybe I would like to upload it to the Mageia repo.

That's not possible, all packages in Mageia repo need to be built on the Mageia buildsystem by a Mageia packager.

You are much welcome to practice to become an accepted packager!
