[REOPENED] Suddenly no sound and Sound setup opens badly

Postby wilcal » Dec 7th, '11, 00:26

After todays updates ( Mageia 2 Gnome Alpha 1 32-bit )
the sound went away and when I open the Sound
control in tools it opens badly and hangs the
system. Anyone else seeing the same?

I am glad these updates fixed someone problems, but it has broken totally the sound in my kde 64 bits. Not sure f it were the updates, but it is a strange coincidence. No sound card is being detected at all.

Apparently it was the updates related to udev. I downgraded all udev packages and acl package to the ones of alpha1 and sound worked again.
Maybe it is related with me having sysvinit still (i can't boot yet at all with systemd-sysvinit, although from time to time i give it a try)

I think we have the same issue with systemd...

And I have no sound at all... will check for udev update. Thanks for the lead.

I am using Cauldron with KDE 64-bit, but not systemd, and I lost sound after updating today (previous update was last Friday). Todays update did include udev. I also noted that although Desktop Effects were still enabled at startup, they were not working.

Rebooting with init=/bin/systemd on the command line gives me sound and Desktop Effects.
I have not installed systemd-sysvinit.

Just reopened the topic.
Seems problems as described still exist.

Hi.

udev is the cause.

Workaround:
Add your user to the "audio" group (in /etc/group)
Pulseaudio will recognize the soundcard again and sound will work
(tip from the Mageia-dev mailinglist)

cheers,
Bernd

Edit: addendum

I'm doing regular backups with redobackup (redobackup.org). Backup and restoring a whole Cauldron system is a matter of 15 mins.

So, three times I did a restore to an one week old cauldron and did a

- full update, including udev: no sound, Pulse doesn't recognize card

- full update, but without udev: everythings fine

- full update, including udev, adding user to audio-group: everythings fine

cheers.

The update of udev had also another side effect for me: cdemu stoped working. (it complained something about it couldn't open a session).

redobackup sounds interesting, thanks for the hint :)

I had to reboot after adding the user to the group.
Now I have sound.

The new udev 175 1mga2 doesn't solve this ...
Problems with devices (sound, virtualbox ...) endure ...
cheers,
Bernd
